COACH BUSSAN’S COMMENTS: We had an excellent beginning on a challenging course against a quality field that included some of Class 4A’s better programs. Our summer training paid off as we competed extremely well and moved forward throughout the race. Senior Alex Lamp ran an outstanding race finishing runner-up to Kevin Lewis of Ottumwa, last year’s 5th place Class 4A state finisher and defeating Marshalltown’s #1 runner with a strong final 250 meters. Alex set a new PR of 16:31 breaking his old PR set at the state meet by 29 seconds. Senior Mason Hedeen used a strong push forward in the final mile to finish as our #2 and Andrew Laird had the strongest race of his career and ran aggressively to finish as our #3. Our two, brand new cross country runners sophomores Nick Thilges and freshman Ben Mossman, were extremely aggressive early in the race and hung on to finish as our #4 and #5 runners. A tight battle ensued for our 6th and 7th positions with Ethan Glenn and Austin Elm slightly edging out a fine run by Jacob Clabaugh. Our depth was demonstrated by the tight pack of runners that came quickly behind our top 8 as this meet doubled as a time trial. On the J.V. side, Derek Turner did a fine job considering that he is overcoming a bout with mono. It will be exciting to see what we can do at home against a large field of schools that feature some of the best 3A and 2A programs in the state.

COACH BUSSAN’S COMMENTS: I thought our girls did an excellent job of following our race plan given the relative inexperience of the squad. We had practiced it going out more slowly and then moving forward throughout the race. 800 meters out I don’t believe we had anybody in the top 40 runners but by mile and a half mark Brenna and Morgan were 23rd and 25th and the rest of girls had moved up well and by the end of the race Brenna and Morgan were battling and nearly broke the top 10 against a fine field. That’s a great job by two sophomores who had to be asked to step forward to do leadership roles this year. Alicia Long and Brittney Dodge did a nice job of leading the next wave of runners and the rest of the girls competed well with each other for our top 7 positions. We have more depth than I originally though which should allow us to become a very effective squad. On the J.V. side, Cassie Crick ran aggressively in her first race and performed well as did the other girls.
We look forward to seeing how we stack up against the competition with schools more our size at the home meet on Tuesday at the Links Golf Course beginning at 5 p.m. There is an admission charge of $5.00 per car.
