COACH BUSSAN’S COMMENTS:
It was a very good day for our program.  To have both squads involved at the state level was a great accomplishment for the kids and our staff.  Both teams earned top 10 finishes which was one of our pre-meet goals.
BOYS: Tony Fischels and Chris Wardell ran an exceptional race.  They followed our game plan exactly by letting Wahlert’s Ryan Dolan lead the first mile into a fierce head wind.  As planned, they maintained contact within the top group of 5-7 runners.  They then moved forward with Chris taking the lead and Tony moving to second at about the 2 mile mark.  Dolan then responded and Tony, Chris and approximately 3-4 other runners went with him.  As they made the turn for home, Dolan established a 20-25 meter lead over Tony but Tony had separated from the remainder of the pack.  He used a strong kick to hold off Charles City freshman, Isaac Wendland.  Chris battled strongly to finish 5th, four seconds behind Tony.
This marks the second year our boys team has had two all state athletes.  It is a credit to their hard work and commitment.   Tony’s runner-up finish is the highest finish ever by a male Webster City Cross Country athlete.  It is second overall to 1994 girls’ state champion Jana Peterson.  Tony and Chris’ finish brings the historical total number of Lynx Cross Country All State team members to 7 boys and 3 girls.   The remainder of our boys squad went out strongly but were unable to sustain the pace.  They continued to battle, however, which allowed us to finish 7th.  While our boys graduate Tony, Joel and Dusty, along with Chris Scholtens from our J.V. squad, they should set high goals for next season.  We return an all state athlete in Chris as well as our #3, 5 and 7 runners and our top alternate.  They, along with some very talented and dedicated 8th graders, will give us the opportunity to challenge for conference and state qualification once again.
GIRLS: Our girls ran a very solid team race.  We only had a 40 second gap among our 5 scoring runners.  Our tight pack allowed us to break into the top 10.  Kelsey Tompkins ran a very strong race and pushed forward to finish 42nd.  Freshman Ashley Grimm also pushed toward the front third of the race.  Junior Shannon Kane had one of her better recent races in finishing 66th.  Emily Long ran a very steady race throughout to finish as our 4th runner.  The surprise of the meet was junior Jesse Severson who entered the meet as our #7 runner and ran near Shannon for much of the race before fading slightly at the end to finish with Emily as our #5.  Her performance was a real key to our being able to finish in the top 10.  It represented a 30-40 second improvement on a day when most runners were well off their pace due to the extremely high winds.  Sophomore Becky Perin had a solid effort as our #6.  Our usual #5 runner, Libby McMurray, had a very difficult race and fell back early.  Our girls return our entire varsity line-up as well as all of our J.V. except one.  With the addition of some talented 8th graders, they should look forward to even higher goals next season.
Our banquet has been moved from its original date to Thursday, November 11th from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the middle school.  The dinner is potluck.  The event is open to all athletes, family members, cross country alumni, team supporters and community members.  Those attending should bring table service, a hot dish and a desert item.  The meal will begin at 6:30 with awards to follow at 7:15.
