COACH BUSSAN’S COMMENTS:
We are thrilled that for the first time in 12 years we will be taking both our girls and boys to the state meet.  It is a real credit to our athletes, parents, coaching staff and supporters that we will be one of the few programs in the state represented on both sides.
For our girls, this is the culmination of 3 years worth of goal setting, hard work and leadership on the part of our junior class.  After coming up short the last two years, they were finally able to break through and accomplish another major goal with the help of our freshmen and sophomores. Garner Hayfield, currently ranked 7th in the state, ran away with the meet.  We had a strong race against Sioux City Heelan who features one of the top individuals in the state.  As we have come to count on, freshman Ashley Grimm ran a strong race to earn all district honors.  Veterans Kelsey Tompkins, Emily Long, Shannon Kane and Libby McMurray worked well together to put us in front of 3 ranked opponents.  Becky Perin and Jessie Severson both ran well as our #6 and #7 runners.  Becky, in particular, had a very strong race and finished in front of a number of other schools scoring runners.  It was particularly rewarding to qualify out of a district that featured 5 ranked teams after we had been dropped from the rankings for the last 2 weeks.
Our boys overcame adversity as our regular #3, Nick Barnes had a difficult race due to an illness he has been battling this week.  Our other athletes stepped forward and allowed us to qualify.  In particular, Dusty Rich, our usual #6, came forward with a personal record performance and pushed strongly over the final mile when he realized Nick was in trouble.  In addition, Senior Joel Abbott had one of his best races of the year as did sophomore Alex Flege.  Freshman Jesse Ogg set another personal record as our #7 runner.  Tony Fischels and Chris Wardell continue to show that they are among the states elite as they had total control of the race from start to finish.  Humboldt, who we soundly defeated at conference, earned the district title with a strong team race.  Hopefully, we can get everyone healthy and show our true potential at our 9th consecutive appearance for the boys at the state meet next Saturday.
