| COACH BUSSAN’S COMMENTS: | |||||||||||
| BOYS: Our boys team honored our program’s tradition of excellence by running by far their best race this season. I am extremely proud of the way we competed. When you consider that we started the year at the Lynx Invitational being beaten by Eagle Grove, St. Edmond, Humboldt and Ft. Dodge and that within the last 5 days, we have defeated all of those teams except Eagle Grove, it is clear that our boys have come a long way. Eagle Grove and coach Jerry Becker should be congratulated for also showing great improvement in running a great race to earn the title which ends our run of 8 consecutive conference championships. As expected, Tony Fischels and Chris Wardell separated from the field early and dominated the race. It is a great reward for senior Tony Fischels to be crowned our conference champion. He earned it through many miles and hours of work daily throughout the summer. Chris continues to be one of the very best runners in the area and is showing improvement as we move toward district and state. | |||||||||||
| Nick Barnes has improved immensely from a year ago when he was 5th in the J.V. conference race in a time of 18:49. To finish 12th in a new personal record of 17:40 on a challenging course is a statement of how much our team matters to Nick. Joel Abbott stepped forward with his first race below 18:00 and competed very well. Alex Flege ran strong as our #5. Dusty Rich and Jesse Ogg both set substantial new personal records and really stepped up as well. If we can duplicate this effort next week at district, we will have an excellent opportunity to return to the state meet for the 9th consecutive year. | |||||||||||
| Our junior varsity competed well. Aaron Bieker ran very well in finishing 5th in 19:32. Aaron will be our alternate for the district meet. Drew Hunt, who ran the Chicago Marathon on Sunday, chose to compete and set a new personal record of 20:46. Senior Chris Scholtens ran aggressively near the front of the race early and finished well. The remainder of our lineup had solid races. Mac McCollough set a new personal record in his best race of the year. | |||||||||||
| GIRLS: Our girls ran an exceptional team race. This is the first time since 1992 that we have had 5 all conference girls in one race. That team holds the lowest score for five runners in a conference meet at 18. They placed 1,2,4,5,6. That team went on to finish state runner-up to Iowa City High School. From top to bottom and including our junior varsity runners, our girls ran with a purpose and determination. This was by far our finest race, not only of this season but in recent years. Freshman Ashley Grimm, despite battling an ongoing respiratory illness, had the lead in the race until the final 300 meters. To finish conference runner-up after being in the hospital a week ago is a testament to her toughness. Kelsey Tompkins showed great leadership as she led the first mile of the race and brought her teammates along with her. | |||||||||||
| Emily Long finished the final 800 meters exceptionally well to move to 5th and Shannon Kane was consistent throughout the race to finish 7th. Perhaps the biggest improvement of the night came from #5 runner Libby McMurray who earned her 2nd all conference award by running 20 seconds faster than she has all season and closed our 1-5 gap to 40 seconds. Two weeks ago that gap had been no better than 1:30. Our #6 and #7 runners Becky Perin and Katie Greufe also ran very well. Becky, in particular, was a strong 17th place. | |||||||||||
| Our junior varsity athletes dominated that race as well. Jessie Severson, who has been recovering from a hip injury all season, ran a tremendous race with her only competition being the lead cart. Her 17:44 was far and away her best race of the season. Teammates Jennie Bunkofske and Emily Sewick solidified our pack by placing 2-3 behind her. Senior Ashton Jacobson had her best race in 2 years by finishing 5th. First year runner Elizabeth Johnson has shown tremendous improvement over the course of the season and finished 7th. Natoshia Wardell finished off our J.V. effort in 25th place. | |||||||||||
| We will now prepare for our district meet which features 5 ranked teams. This type of an effort should motivate us to a performance capable of earning our first trip to the state meet since 1993. | |||||||||||
