COACH BUSSAN’S COMMENTS:
BOYS:  This was an important meet for our team and also for Tony and Chris.  It was important for our team to show improvement after a sub-par race at Eldora.  We did that as Nick Barnes and Alex Flege returned to form.  Nick had a very sound race as our #3 runner and Alex was only slightly behind.  We defeated Ft. Dodge who had soundly defeated us at our home meet to start the season.  Tony and Chris had exceptional races.  Tony wanted to open with the Roosevelt runners and so he went out in 4:50 for the first mile with them.  They then made a push and Tony needed to back off a bit.  He recovered, however, and battled two of Mason City’s runners as well as West Des Moines’ Sam Bailin, all of whom are highly ranked in 4A.  Chris also ran very well at the front of the race and battled Ft. Dodge’s Tyler Jordison as well as Roosevelt’s Zach Dobson in finishing 8th.  By finishing in the top 10 of this meet, they have made the statement that they will be contenders at the state meet.  The rest of our lineup had solid races.  If we can pull our 3-5 pack together and run aggressively at conference, it should be a great battle between Eagle Grove, St. Edmond, Humboldt and ourselves.  On the J.V. side, Aaron Bieker ran a very strong race and continues to show improvement each race.
GIRLS:  This race should be a good confidence boost for our girls as we move toward the conference meet on Tuesday.  We competed very well against the large school field.  Kelsey and Ashley did an excellent job at the front of our pack.  Kelsey, in particular, had one of her best races of the year.  Ashley deserves credit for pulling off a very good race in spite of spending two days in the hospital earlier this week with the flu.  Emily Long had another solid effort.  Shannon Kane is battling some foot problems but hung in there as our #4.  Libby McMurray showed improvement as our #5 runner.  Becky Perin and Katie Greufe continued their late season surge to our top 7.  After an unsettling week this should set us up well for conference.  The conference meet will be interesting as we enter as the favorite.  We will face a stern challenge from Algona Bishop Garrigan. On the J.V. side, Jennie Bunkofske ran very well and continues to push hard for a varsity position.  Jessie Severson is rounding into shape after dealing with a leg injury throughout most of the year.
