COACH BUSSAN’S COMMENTS:
BOYS:  This race represented a significant improvement for our boys squad.  We were able to defeat Humboldt for the first time this year and we were within 2 points of St. Edmond.  As usual, Tony Fischels and Chris Wardell led the way and had outstanding races against freshman Isaac Wendland of Charles City and top 10 ranked Nick Hibma of Spirit Lake.  The difference for our squad were the improved performances of our 3-5 runners.  Nick Barnes set a new personal record and broke 18 minutes for the first time.  Alex Flege broke 18 minutes for the first time this season and both ran very competitive races against our conference opponents.  Joel Abbott was significantly improved over previous efforts this season.  Dustin Rich also ran his best race of the year.  Aaron Bieker rounded out our varsity line-up.  If we can continue to improve, we have opportunities before us at both the conference and district meets.  On the J.V. side, freshman Jesse Ogg ran a solid race and we had strong efforts out of Drew Hunt, Brandon Hicok and Chris Scholtens.
GIRLS:  Our girls team faired very well against several good teams from northwest Iowa.  Estherville is currently ranked and Spirit Lake has performed very well in meets in that area.  Bishop Garrigan was surprisingly strong and will give us a good test at the conference meet.  Individually, freshman Ashley Grimm stepped forward against an outstanding field to place 6th.  Kelsey Tompkins used a surge in the last 800 meters to move to our #2 position and Emily Long had a solid race as well.  Shannon Kane battled her way through a difficult race to score for us.  Libby McMurray and Jennie Bunkofske both moved forward with good support and Katie Gruefe along with J.V. competitors Becky Perin and Jessie Severson ran well.  This meet was a good indication of our potential should we be sent to the northwest Iowa district at Algona in 3 weeks.
