COACH BUSSAN’S COMMENTS
Boys:  I was pleased with the progress shown by our team.  We found ourselves in a great race with conference rival Humboldt for the team title.  While we came up on the short end, we did a much better job of bringing our #3-5 runners together.  Alex and Joel moved much closer to Nick at this race and it showed in our team score.  Nick continues to lead the way for that pack.  Nevada is considered one of the top central Iowa teams and so I felt very good about a solid finish in front of them.  Tony Fischels and Chris Wardell ran an outstanding race together and separated early from Perry’s Mike Stout who was 6th at the state cross country meet a year ago.  Tony then made a strong push with a half mile left to go and took control of the race.  On the J.V. side, Aaron Bieker had an outstanding race and a huge personal record in finishing 32nd.
Girls:  The girls ran a very good team race against an exceedingly strong girl’s field.  Johnston is a top 10 ranked 4A school.  Waukee won both of the first two meets and Nevada has won a meet already this season.  Garner-Hayfield was a state qualifier a year ago and returned all of their runners.  So to finish 4th amongst that field represented a good job.  We did have a gap between our 4th and 5th runners but we know that we are capable of closing that.  I was very pleased by the race run by Shannon Kane as she stepped forward to finish 9th.  Emily Long and Kelsey Tompkins, along with Ashley Grimm, all formed a very tight knit pack.  Libby McMurray had a strong final half of the race and ran the final stretch with Ashley Hanson.  Becky Perin did a nice job in her first varsity race.  Overall, if our girls can continue to improve, we will have an opportunity to make state.  On the J.V. side, Katie Greufe had a fantastic final half mile to finish 5th and to earn a varsity position at Saturday’s meet at Carroll Kuemper.  Jennie Bunkofske also ran a strong race.
