COACH BUSSAN’S COMMENTS:
Boys:  We had a number of positive performances and I felt we were much more competitive across our lineup as compared to our home meet a week ago.  Tony Fischels continues to have a great senior season as he raced NU High’s Tim McKenna to the wire in finishing 2nd.  In the process, Tony defeated Waukon’s top runners as well as a number of other all state athletes.  Chris Wardell made a strong move in the final mile up a hill and separated himself from a quality field in winning the junior race.  His time would have placed him 5th overall in the meet.  Nick Barnes continued to show improvement as evidenced by his 10th place finish in the junior race.  Dusty Rich is showing rapid growth as he ran with Joel Abbott throughout much of the senior race.  Alex Flege ran a strong middle portion of the sophomore race to finish 11th.  Freshman Jessie Ogg ran a strong final half in moving up to finish 20th.  We missed defending our overall team title by only 7 points against some of the best cross country programs in the state.  As long as we continue to make steady progress, we should find ourselves in the midst of the action by season’s end.
Girls:  Our junior girls collected their 3rd consecutive age group title at this meet.  Kelsey Tompkins ran a statement race as she bolted to the front early and battled for a top 5 position throughout.  Shannon Kane opened a bit slower but made a strong move throughout the final half of the race to move up to 8th.  Ashley Hanson and Libby McMurray ran together through 2 miles.  Ashley made a strong move to the finish line to finish 17th.  Libby was a strong 20th.  Sophomore Emily Long also had a strong effort as she moved up through the field over the second mile and pushed her way to a 3rd place finish.  Becky Perin had a breakthrough effort to earn her our 7th position at the Ballard Invitational next week.  Freshman Ashley Grimm got out strongly and raced well throughout to finish 7th.  Our girls are competing very well and closing down our performance gaps.  We have made progress compared to a year ago.  If we can continue to improve and compete as well as we did tonight, then we have an opportunity to accomplish our season’s goals.
