COACH BUSSAN’S COMMENTS:  This is the first time we have ever taken a middle school team to the coach’s sponsored state meet.  We faced some of the very best programs from across the state of Iowa.  The format of the meet had four separate races, one for boys and one for girls at the 7th and then the 8th grade levels.  Classes 1A-4A ran together and then were separated on paper afterwards into large schools-4A/3A and small schools-2A/1A for team scoring purposes.  Individual places were awarded on the combined race.  Each race had well over 100 runners.  Four runners were required at each grade level in order to have a team score.  We ran scoring teams in the 7th grade girls and 8th grade boys races.
Our 7th grade girls competed exceptionally well placing runner-up to Waukon.  Mikaela Pruismann was outstanding as she battled an Iowa City Southeast athlete throughout the race finishing state runner-up.  Our other athletes ran very well as a pack and finished in the top third of the race enabling our team to defeat several of the very best programs in the state.  This group, combined with our talented 8th grade individuals should make a very strong team in the future.  Our 8th grade girls performances were affected by an injury sustained by leader Paige Bonjour early in the race.  When she went down with a sprained ankle, both of our other girls slowed down to check on her and then were affected by their concern for her throughout the remainder of the race.  This group is very talented and has an opportunity to have an impact at the high school level next season.
Our 8th grade boys team also performed very well, finishing 5th and defeating some outstanding programs in the process.  Ben Lambert ran aggressively near the front of the race and fared well finishing 6th against a strong field.  Josh Elliot also had an excellent race in finishing in the top ¼ of the race.  Eric Sletten and John Hill paired up and worked together to finish in the top ½.  Zach Johnson had a solid performance to finish 74th.  Grant Ryherd suffered a severe side stitch, but held on to finish in 107th.    The seventh grade boys gave a solid effort.  In particular Josh Graves ran well finishing in the top ½ of the race.  Dylan Ryder and Connor Fisher raced well together.

COACH BUSSANS COMMENTS:  Many of our athletes competed very well against a strong middle school field.  Ben Lambert had an outstanding race and continues to prove that he is among the best middle school runners in the state.  Josh Elliot had a solid race to earn all conference honors in his first season.  The remainder of the boys performed well.  Our girls ran strong with 3 all conference performers.  In particular, Mikaela Pruismann ran very well in finishing runner-up to an Iowa Falls athlete.  Our top 12 all had performances equal to or better than some of the middle school performances our current high school varsity runners posted when they competed at that age.  We have a potential to continue a strong tradition of cross country if we are willing to train like champions and stay together as a team.
We have 16 middle school runners who have chosen to compete in the Iowa Association of Track Coaches State Wide Middle School Meet this coming Saturday.  It will be exciting to have the opportunity to compete with athletes from across the state.  The race will be held on Saydel’s cross country course.  Races begin at 12:30.
