Introduction to Conservation Genetics

This course is intended as an introduction to the concepts and technologies utilized in the field of conservation genetics through the examination of case studies and lectures.

Upon completion of the course students should be able to demonstrate a basic understanding of conservation genetic theory and methods and how those methods can be applied to answer questions related to the genetic structure of populations.

They should also be able to critically evaluate a conservation genetic research proposal as well as evaluate the resulting data with regards to how it bears on the original question.  By the end of class the students should have gained an understanding of the various genetic tools, their applications and appropriateness for particular conservation questions.  Students should also become familiar with conservation activities/guidelines at national and international levels.
