This is a false-color, near-infrared image of a massive star-forming region about 60 light years across located 7000 light years from the Sun. Near-infrared images at three different wavelengths from the 2MASS survey were colored blue, green and red and combined. Images like this allow astronomers to detect very young stars which are still embedded in the dust and gas from which they formed. In this image these very young stars show up as distinctly red objects.
