Composition
Assignment for Piano
Due 1-27-03
Criteria
-
This brief composition
(approximately 16 measures) should incorporate at least three impressionistic
devices learned in class.
-
Notation should be neat and
should follow conventional notation practices for piano notation.
-
Use computer notation software
if possible.
-
Make sure the piece is playable
without too much practice time. You may wish to avoid chords that are larger
than an octave unless you know for sure your performer has large hands.
-
You will be required to perform
or find someone to perform your piece during an evening session to be announced
later.
-
Suggestions to get started:
-
Use a familiar tune and modify
it to give it an impressionis feel to it (change mode or use whole tone
or pentatonic scale).
-
Build layers to go with the
tune. Like in Voiles ou may want to add an ostinato, octaves, quartal
chords, or other chords for the layers. Both Voiles and Des pas sur
la neige have an umber of rhtyhmic ideas you may find useful.
-
Base the piece on a chord progression
decided on beforehand, such as the following for a minor key: (you may
use this if you wish): III VI7 v
i VI iv
V7/III III VI7 ii7
v
-
Use wider spacing in chords
between notes in the bass clef and below for greater clarity.
Notation review:
Group the two staves and
use a piano brace at the beginning of each system.
Use standard score set up
for placing title (centered at top), composer name (justified on right
side, above first system), and tempo (aligned above time signature)
Notate clefs and key signature
for each system include time signature for first system.
