Joan E. Herwig, Associate Professor of Human Development & Family Studies Iowa and Director of the Child Development Laboratory School at Iowa State University, Ames. She is currently president of the National Association of Early Childhood Teacher Educators (NAECTE). During Fall 1998 she is teaching HDFS 616A Early Childhood Education Seminar. In Spring 1998 she taught HDFS 525 Theories & Research in Early Childhood Education (see below for information about the course).

Seminar Objectives

To understand the nature of the responsibilities and conditions of a Child Development Laboratory School teaching assistant (TA) as an early childhood educator/schoolage child care provider.
To examine the philosophy and practices of early childhood education and schoolage care as implemented in the Child Development Laboratory School.
To develop and utilize skills in planning and implementing an individually-based and age- appropriate program for children designed to enhance their total development.
To demonstrate a variety of teaching strategies to enhance children's thinking and concept development.
To develop skills in the supervision of undergraduate student participants (221, 226, 343, 455, 317D, 417A, 417C) assigned to the Child Development Laboratory School.

Seminar Requirements:

Attendance at all class meetings.
Contributions to class discussion that reflect readings, reflection and classroom experience.
Introduction of additional relevant readings and suggested experiences.
Sharing of classroom materials: daily schedule, example of a weekly plan, assessment plan, newsletter.
Preparation of 10-minute videotape of you with at least one child in your classroom.
