Competitors Unfortunately, once again we had no direct competitors in the multi-rider competition. There were two teams registered to compete against us, but one team did not show up, and the other was unable too unstable to pass safety inspection. The team unable to pass the inspection was a two wheeled design, and it would repeatedly fall over on its side. We did have four other teams competing against us in the endurance event. Each team had a very well built and durable vehicle capable of taking the abuse of the event. Design Competition The design competition was the first event held on Friday, right after we arrived in Orlando. Jeff and Simon gave the presentation to a group of judges, and then the judges had time to ask questions and inspect the vehicle. Our the final place was determined by our design report and from the information given during the presentation. Sprint Event The sprint event was disappointing this year in terms of top speed. The course had less than 300 meters to get up to speed, and it was located on a slight uphill with over 10 feet of elevation gain over the run up length. Both of these factors limited the top speed of all of the competitors. The top speed recorded at the event was 38.9 mph by University of Missouri Rolla. Our team had a top speed in the men's class of 26.8 mph, and the women's top speed was 18.9 mph. Utility Endurance Event Our team competed against four other single rider teams in the utility endurance event. This was ISU's first year competing in this event, and it was a success. The event consisted of a lap through parking lots, up and down a level of the parking garage, city streets, a slalom course, and a parking stall where we had to stop and pick up or drop off items. We ended the event in first place, after a total time of 35:50, which is an average speed of roughly 10.4 mph including the stops to pick up/drop off items and pit stops. Endurance Event There were no other multi-rider teams to compete with in our class, so we won the race by default in first place for multi-rider. We ran the race at the same time as all of the 25 other single rider teams, and competed against them for an overall finish. We ended up finishing in 4th place, which is excellent. The teams that finished ahead of us were all teams that have competed in the HPV competition for many years and have years of refinement in their design. Finishing close to them is a great accomplishment for the team. |
