| STUDENT CONFERENCES |
COMMUNICATION DURING YOUR CONFERENCE
Your conference is the opportunity for us to
work one-on-one to address any concerns you may have about your writing
or about mv class. Time is limited. so we need to be well prepared to use
the time well.
Therefore, please follow the instructions below
when preparing for your conference:

Conferences:
I will try to have a conference with every student
during the semester. We will pre-arrange these conference appointments
and class will occasionally be cancelled to allow conference time. Missing
a scheduled conference counts as an absence and also means you forfeit
the conference1 meaning I will not set aside another 1 5-minute slot for
you, although you may see me as a walk-in during my office hours. If you
need to confer with me about your work beyond the conference appointment,
arrange to see me during my office hours, call me and leave a message on
voice mail, or e-mail me. Please do not phone me at my home.

Conferences:
Each of you will have one midterm conference scheduled this semester. If you have any questions concerning assignments, need additional help during the writing process, or want to discuss how things are going for you in the course, please schedule an appointment with me before or after class.
Writing Center:
You might also consider checking out the Writing
Center in Ross Hall, Room 418. Tutors at the center will read your papers
and work one-on-one with you. Make sure you bring your assignment guidelines
with you. If you would like help on a regular basis, you might consider
setting up a standing appointment with a tutor. Call 294-5411 to arrange
appointments.

Individual Conferences:
Everyone will sign up for at least two personal conferences with me. I'll let you know the exact dates a bit later in the semester. Conferences are a great opportunity for me to meet with each of you in a one-on-one setting. The primary goal of individual conferences is to discuss any writing concerns you may have, to go over any essays-in-progress, and just to talk about anything you may have on your mind. The environment is fairly laid-back, relaxed, and conversational. I will have responded to all of your essays up to the point of your conference, but I still expect you to come with questions and/or topics for discussion. This is your time, and it is up to you as to how you use that time.
The Writing Center:
I am always
willing to set up a meeting anytime you need, in order to aid your writing
process throughout the semester. There may, however, be times when time
constraints and scheduling problems won't allow me to address a particular
concern as quickly as you need me to. When this happens, the English Department
has a wonderful resource called The Writing Center. Located in Ross 418,
this is a place to go for help with specific writing concerns, from self-help
worksheets about grammar and punctuation, to tutoring sessions dealing
with clearly communicating the thesis statement of your paper. Their staff
of tutors are normally pretty heavily scheduled, so make appointments well
in advance, especially later in the semester, and come to your appointment
with questions planned.

Conferences
In addition
to meeting with me as need during workshop sessions, each student is required
to meet with me for two conferences outside of class time, and one of these
outside conferences must occur before midsemester. It is your responsibility
to schedule these conferences and to appear at the scheduled time.
