| ATTENDANCE |
There is no
attendance policy for this class. I consider each of my students responsible
adults who know how to set their priorities. Therefore, I accept the burden
of creating a class that you will want to attend with regularity. I should,
however, point out that over half the important activity planned for this
class will take place in the classroom. If you do not attend class daily,
you will have a very difficult time succeeding.
I also feel that for our class to be effective, we must think of ourselves
as a community of scholars engaged in inquiry. To encourage this feeling
of community, I am therefore asking each of you to take responsibility
for other individuals in the community. Therefore, I have established the
following classroom attendance practice.
Attendance Practice: Each day, I will simply count the number of
students in attendance. When I have determined how many are missing, I
will expect the attending students to identity who is missing. arrange
a contact person to call each missing person, and to provide notes to each
missing person. This practice will increase your interaction with your
classmates and create more unity in our group. After a few weeks, no one
should ever walk into this classroom feeling like a stranger.
Meanwhile, I will keep a record of who has missed class. If any student
misses 3 or more classes before regular scheduled conferences, I will make
a note to discuss the attendance problem at conference.

Class Attendance, Participation, and Other Stuff:
I don't recommend that you miss class at all.
More than three absences will be considered excessive and will affect your
final grade. If you miss nine classes you will fail the class.
I also expect you to be in class on time. Continual
tardiness will lower you final grade. I don't repeat stuff for latecomers
anyway.
Some of our work will be done in groups and will
involve sharing papers and ideas with others. Because it can be a little
scary letting other people read your work (I get nervous about sharing
my writing anyway) and/or hear your ideas, I expect you to interact courteously
with each other and listen closely to your classmates' opinions. Your participation
in class discussion is important. We can learn from dissenting opinions;
I want to hear them all.

Attendance/Participation:
Attendance and participation (as mentioned above) are essential in a small, college-level composition and critical thinking class like English 10X. Regular attendance is expected and lack of it will prove detrimental to you, as I will not spend office hours "catching you up." More than four unexcused absences will be considered excessive and will lower your final grade. If you cannot be in class, you must notify me via my voice mail or email. You must also call a classmate to verify the assignment and to get notes. Notifying me you are going to miss does not automatically excuse the absence; excused absences are determined by me and must meet the criteria explained below.
Attendance Policy:
Aside from university vacation days and announced
class cancellations for conferences, you are expected to be in class. Your
regular attendance is an integral factor in your progress in English
10X because it directly relates to your
acquisition of information; your ability to participate; your performance
on quizzes, activities, and assignments; and ultimately, of course, to
your (course number) grade.
If you miss class 1-4
times, there will be no directly punitive action taken against your grade
although you may miss an in-class exercise or a quiz that cannot be made
up. Missing class carries this inevitable risk. It is difficult to schedule
make-ups for in-class writings of papers, so make every effort to attend
on those days.
If you miss class 5-7
times, your final grade will be lowered,two grading steps (a B- will become
a C), unless your absences are due to extreme cases of emergency or to
university business (family emergencies; serious illnesses; travel for
other classes, university organizations, or athletics). These instances
must be verified by your academic or athletic advisor at the time they
occur.
PLEASE NOTE: If you commute from out
of town and the weather poses a hazard, that is an excused absence.
After 8 absences, you
have missed approximately 20% of the class sessions--an excessive amount
at the college level. At this point, you must drop the course or you will
receive an F in English 10X.
Sometimes, even with
excused absences, your attendance can be so compromised that it becomes
impossible for you to be successful in the course. I will contact your
advisor if your attendance is a problem.

Attendance:
Regular attendance
is required, and you should plan to be here for every class session. More
than 4 absences during the course will lower your final grade by one full
letter grade. You cannot receive a passing grade in this course if you
have more than 8 class absences over the semester.

Attendance:
Regular attendance is required, and you should
plan to be here for every session. More than three absences during the
term will lower your final grade in the course one letter grade for every
absence after the three-absence limit.

Class attendance and participation
Classes are
run in a discussion/workshop format. Your participation and involvement
in class are important, not only for you, but also for your classmates.
I will allow you two absences without penalty--no questions asked--but
not on group project days. If some personal emergency occurs that will
result in your being absent from class, especially on a group project day,
please let me know as soon as possible before the class meets that day
so that we can make other arrangements. Work due on your excused absence
days must be turned in on time, either sent with a classmate or delivered
to me before our class period. Four absences will be considered excessive
and will affect, that is lower, your semester grade--I mean Six absences
(two weeks of class) for whatever reason (student athletes included) will
be grouds for failing the class--I also mean it.

|
||
Attendance:
To coincide with the writing progression, I believe that attendance and participation are vital components of this course. This is especially true because we are meeting on Tuesdays and Thursdays, so our class periods are longer. I will take attendance every class, but you are allowed 2 absences for the semester. Anything more than that (excluding legitimate excuses such as serious illness, death in the family, etc.) will result in a penalty:
3-4 absences = course grade lowered one letter grade
5-6 absences = course grade lowered two letter grades
7 or more = failure
|
|
||
Attendance:
I hate the thought of having to fail someone solely on the basis of attendance, as it seems superficial and unnecessary. Be that as it may, attendance issues do tend to disrupt class time activities, especially with the nature of this particular class. Besides, to be frank, there's really no reason for you to miss class other than illness because you live in your classroom. Please do not make this a negative issue. My personal attendance policy is as follows:
Responsibilites when Absent:
You are responsible
for all information covered during every class period. If you miss a class
meeting, you must find out from a classmate what you missed. I will
not answer questions like "What did I miss yesterday?" I devote a lot of
time and energy into gathering the course materials, organizing activities
around those materials/topics, and assembling them all into a workable
time line; if you miss a day, you need to devote a bit of time of your
own to finding out what you missed. As I mentioned earlier, because the
In-Class Writings are listed in the syllabus, if you miss an In-Class Writing
day, you will need to turn in the writing on the day you come back.
|
|
||
Class Attendance and Participation:
A significant amount of the work done in this
class will be in a discussion and workshop format. Your regular attendance
and active participation are important to make these successful activities.
Please let me know if you need to miss a class. If you have more than three
absences, it will effect your grade: 3-5 = course grade lowered one letter
grade, 5-7 = course grade lowered two letter grades, and more than 7= failure.
If you miss a class, you are responsible for turning in any papers that
were due and finding out what will be going on in the next class. If you
think your absences are the result of extenuating circumstances, you need
to discuss the situation with me.

Attendance
English 104 is F-U-N FUN! We are going to be reading and writing about so much cool stuff that I hope you will not want to miss a single second of our stimulating discussion. However, I do know that occasionally complications will arise that will require your shining face to be absent from the classroom. This being the case, you are allowed six absences, excused or unexcused FOR THE ENTIRE SEMESTER. Beyond four absences, your final grade will drop one letter grade. Beyond five, your final grade will drop two letter grades. Beyond six, you will fail the course.
If you are absent, you are responsible for contacting a fellow class participant or myself OUTSIDE OF CLASSTIME to find out what you missed.
In the event
of a family or medical emergency, please let me know if you will need to
absent for longer than your seven absences and we can try to make arrangements.
|
|
||
Attendance
Attendance
is required. Much of our class work can't be made up or learned on your
own, and thus becomes your loss. Each student is permitted five (5) absences
from class. There is no qualifying these absences; in other words, there
are no excused or unexcused absences. An absence is counted as an absence,
regardless of the reason that you missed the class. If you find it necessary
to miss more than 5 classes you should consider taking this class at another
time when attendance may not be such a problem for you. More than 5 absences
will be considered excessive and will adversely affect your grade as follows:
6-7 absences will result in your final grade being lowered by one letter;
more than 8 absences and you will fail the course.
|
|
||
Attendance
This is a class
in which participation really matters. Therefore, I expect you to attend
class regularly.
Class
participation and citizenship
I try not to adhere to the "banking" model of education, according to which I, as instructor, "deposit" knowledge into you, as student, as if you were an empty, passive bank account. Rather, I hope that the class develops into a friendly discussion group and we all learn from each other. In order for this to happen, you need to come to class prepared to take part in the day's activities and discussions. Your class participation will therefore influence your final grade. Also, I expect you to treat the other students and the instructor (me) respectfully and ethically. I reserve the right to lower your grade significantly if you don't.
|
|
||
Attendance
Prompt and regular attendance is expected. More than 5 unexcused absences will affect your ability to participate fully in the class and will therefore affect your grade. Frequent lateness will have a similar effect. A total of 10 excused or unexcused absences will seriously undermine your ability to meet the minimum course requirements and will result in failure.
Generally,
excused absences are those for which a business would excuse an employee
(e.g., sickness, deaths in the family, NOT forgetting to set your alarm
clock). All excused absences must be confirmed either (1) in a memo when
you return to class, or (2) by e-mail or a phone call to my office phone
BEFORE the class missed.
