English 105 Objectives:
By the end of the semester, you should be able
to do the following:
· understand, identify, and use key conventions
of academic writing (e.g., format, level of language, style, and documentation)
· analyze professional writing and media
to assess its purpose, audience, and rhetorical strategies
· construct arguments which include logical,
ethical, and emotional appeals
· write rhetorically sound papers that
identify and accurately document source material
· avoid sentence-level errors which are
distracting or confusing to the reader

GENERAL PURPOSE: English 105 focuses on
developing your skills as a reader and as a writer. You will be asked to
summarize, analyze, and respond to a variety of readings, so close reading
will be essential. You will learn and practice the principles of argumentation
and study the power of language. You will prepare a research paper, the
pnnciple assignment in which your research skills and knowledge of documentation
will be demonstrated. Finally, you must meet the English Department's correctness
standard in order to pass the course.
