While growing up, my family was always interested in music. One sister seemed to be singing solos all the time, and my brother was a choir director from the time he started high school. It was natural for me marry a lovely soprano who has made a career of singing and teaching others to do that. Her picture (from a publicity photo for Iowa State University's "Musica Antiqua") is linked to her university homepage.

In spite of all the music around me, I became a professor of biochemistry. My experiments are currently centered around understanding aging, which seems appropriate at this stage of life. My research has led me to the conclusion that we all age and two things might help to keep you young .....1) supplement your diet with "lipoic acid" daily (ask about this one) and 2) sing in a good quartet. However, I have always sung as much as possible, and since the late '80's I have been involved in the barbershop society and an active quartet member. .

My son and daughter followed their mother's lead by staying away from science. Tim is a musician and development director of Bang-on-a-Can Foundation in New York City. Sarah is an artist who works in the Florida State dept of Cultural Affairs in Tallahassee, Florida. One of my daughters' recent paintings (something about earth) adorns this page.
