1.How do I apply for an ILET experience?

Details on each ILET experience can be found in the Academic Programs section of this web site. Applications are by email to ilet@iastate.edu

2. What qualifications are required for enrollment?

Students must normally be studying for a doctorate related to educational technology in one of the partner universities. Exceptions may be granted by the member of faculty leading the activity.

3. Can I afford an ILET experience?

ILET experiences do not require additional tuition fees for students studying for a doctorate related to educational technology in one of the partner universities. Each student should plan a budget for items including travel, subsistence, cultural visits and insurance. ISU Study Abroad web site is a good example of information for US students, and the Aalborg University Study Abroad web site is good example of information for European students.

Students and faculty have found many creative approaches to increase their ability to afford an ILET experience. For example:

  • Travel at cheaper times of the year, e.g. November.
  • Negotiate accommodation with the help of local students they met online through an ILET Reading Group.
  • Seek grant support from sources, such as your home university, Fulbright and Lions Club

4. Can I continue as a graduate or research assistant while undertaking an ILET activity?

Please check this with the relevant ILET coordinators. The answer will depend on policies at all universities involved (at home and abroad). It may be possible to continue work while abroad by using communication technologies, as did Rema Nilakanta (see her story in Student Experiences). The alternative strategy of teaching while abroad was carefully negotiated in advance by John Fraser with permission from his home university.

5. Do I need cultural orientation?

Cultural orientation is an essential element of ILET. All students must strive to work with the international and multilingual aspects of ILET, and to reflect on their own cultural identities. Please read Davis & Cho, 2005.

6. Do I need a foreign language?

ILET communication is mainly in English, with Spanish leading in Barcelona. While ILET is respectful of minority languages, particularly Danish and Catalan, it recognizes that adults studying for a doctorate will have very limited time and ability to further develop their language skills. Students interning in Denmark or Spain are strongly recommended to take an intensive language course at the start of their visit.

7. What educational technologies are used in an ILET Online Reading Group?

Freely accessible web based technologies are used most frequently. The technology(s) generally depend on the faculty leading the experience and the facilities available from their home university. In addition, ILET is able to continue to use the web sites of two professional organizations: SITE and MirandaNet.

8. How have students organized their ILET experiences?

In many different ways. See Student Experiences.

9. How do I ask my own question?

While you may email a question to ilet@iastate.edu, please ask your ILET coordinator at your home university first. Details are provided under Contacts.
