The ILET project provides a range of opportunities to develop international leadership in educational technology:

ILET Certificate
The ILET project (2001-2005) established our certificate in Intercultural Leadership in Educational Technology. The ILET certificate may be earned by a student from one of the partner universities who has provided evidence of potential to become a future leader of educational technology with intercultural understanding. Evidence includes:

  1. ILET Internship as a visiting scholar or Summer Academy in a foreign culture, normally in a partner university overseas.
  2. An artifact suitable for publication in the ILET Student Experiences section of this web site that disseminates the value of the student’s ILET experience(s).
  3. A publication informed by growth of intercultural understanding at the student’s level of graduate education.

  • Assessment for an ILET certificate is through an electronic portfolio: Click here for details.

The ILET Online Reading Group, ILET Summer Academy, and ILET Internship are designed to accelerate students’ development for the ILET certificate.

ILET Online Reading Group

The ILET project established a series of international Reading Groups to enhance intercultural perspectives and scholarship in educational technology. Students from partner universities read articles with discussion facilitated by ILET faculty. The discussions took place in one or more locations accessed via the web. Reading Group resources from 2003-2005 may be accessed here.

Application for each ILET Reading Group will normally open in the preceding month. Please send an email with an expression of interest listing your home university, supervising faculty or major professor, and the focus of your scholarship to ilet@iastate.edu with the subject line: ILET Online Reading Group. Students not from partner universities may be selected for a place at the discretion of the leader of the Reading Group.

An ILET Reading Group will be led by Niki Davis for the month of October 2006 with the topic: Intercultural Issues in Educational Technology. Click here for more information.

ILET Summer Academy

The ILET project held 3 intensive summer courses for students from all 6 partner universities (2003, 2004, 2005). This will continue in Europe as a bi-annual event, which will often include the Doctoral Students’ Summer Conference in the Institute of Education, University of London, UK. The next ILET Summer Academy will be in June 2007 in London.

Application for each Academy will normally open in the preceding October. Please send an email with an expression of interest listing your home university, supervising faculty or major professor, and the focus of your scholarship to ilet@iastate.edu with the subject line: ILET Summer Academy. Students not from partner universities may be selected for a place at the discretion of the leader of the Academy.

ILET Internship

The ILET project established the immense value of internship opportunities; see stories of ILET interns such as Rema Nilakanta, Olatz Lopez, Tom Nyvang ( Davis et al, 2005; Davis & Cho, 2005). While semester-long internships as visiting scholars will be encouraged, a series of shorter visits linked by ongoing communications is also encouraged because that approach may be adapted to an individual graduate student’s personal responsibilities. Please read Student Experiences, including Meredith diPetro, and Hugh Crumley.

Students interested in applying for an ILET Internship should browse expertise in ILET Organizations and descriptions of Student Experiences. Students considering an ILET Internship are strongly encouraged to participate in an ILET Online Reading Group and/or Summer Academy where possible.

ILET internships are limited to students from ILET universities. To express an interest in an internship please send an email listing your home university, supervising faculty or major professor, the partner university you with to visit (if known) and the focus of your scholarship to the ILET coordinator in your home university with a copy to ilet@iastate.edu with the subject line: ILET Internship.

Assessment for an ILET Certificate

Students who wish to be considered for an ILET certificate should present their evidence in a portfolio of artifacts to their home university coordinator. It will be assessed by the coordinator in the first instance and, if judged worthy, the coordinator will share the portfolio with a partner overseas. Coordinators may provide feedback to improve the evidence and the portfolio may be resubmitted. A certificate will be awarded where both coordinators are in agreement that the evidence is worthy. The home university coordinator will also inform the ISU coordinator.

The student must also provide a copy of the successful portfolio of artifacts to the ILET coordinator and by email ilet@iastate.edu. The ILET web site page will be updated, to include the student’s name. Successful students are listed in Students Experiences.
