Course Description (from ISU Catalog)

Math 267, Elementary Differential Equations and Laplace Transforms, Cr. 3. Prereq: Grade of C- or better in Math 166. Solution methods for ordinary differential equations. First order equations, linear equations, constant coefficient equations. Eigenvalue methods for systems of first order linear equations. Introduction to stability and phase plane analysis. Laplace transforms and series solutions to ordinary differential equations.

Assessment and Grading

Homework will be assigned on this web page with a corresponding due date. Late homework will not be accepted (except in cases of illness or emergency). There will be three one-hour exams and one two-hour cumulative final exam. The quiz and exam questions will be based on the homework and in-class examples. Grades will be computed with the following weights:

            Homework                   45%

            3 In-Class Exams         30%

            Final Exam                   25%

            Final grades will be assigned using according to

                        A         92-100

                        A-        90-92

                        B+       88-90

                        B          82-88

                        B-        80-82

                        C+       78-70

                        C         72-78

Software

You will  use a computer algebra system for some of the homework problems. You can use (1) the software provided by the textbook, (2) MATLAB (can be installed from www.it.iastate.edu/matlab/student/)  (3) Mathematica (available in some computer labs on campus or can be purchased for $70 from http://store.wolfram.com/view/app/timedstudent/annual.str), or (4) Maple (available in some computer labs or you can purchase it for $99 from  http://www.maplesoft.com/students/ ). You should also check the Iowa State Bookstore to see if you can purchase the same software at a discount. It is highly recommended that you learn how to use at least one of these software packages in this course.
