Model Cause/Effect Essay

Everyone knows how Cinderella changed her life after meeting the prince. I have my own Cinderella story. I was a little girl who was always in shame. I studied hard but always got bad scores. All my friends were my neighbors. I had never gone to a far place without keeping my family company. However, an amazing change happened in 1989. I did not meet the prince, but passed the universities' entrance examination. As lucky as Cinderella, I went to the top university of my country. My life was changed from that moment.

The first change was independence. I lived in a church dormitory which was near the campus; my parents could not cook and do laundry for me anymore. I had to deal with everything by myself even handle accidents. Once, I fell down from a scooter and hurt my neck and head. I knew I had to save myself at that moment. My parents knew that their little girl had grown up after that. Now, I study alone in a country far from my hometown I can live here as well as I do in my own place.

Getting confidence in myself has led me to more successes. I got my first award of the top five percent in my class in the second year. I was not as smart as a lot of geniuses on the campus, but I got great scores in my interesting subjects. I was active in student activities. We succeeded in holding a campus book exhibition. We survived a serious typhoon when we had a tour in the mountain area. When I became an elder student, I taught and took care of the younger students. An interesting major and abundant student activities built my confidence step by step.

The last change deeply affects my work, my research, and my life now. The university provided a good environment to open my view. My university is famous for freedom - freedom of speech, freedom of life, and freedom in academics. Most of the high school students try to enter my university, and lots of geniuses extend their broad thinking completely there. Learning from them, my thinking became more active. For research, I worked for several groups and got different thinking ways from them. I was also trained to attend international meetings. In addition, I traveled a lot during the university period and experienced different cultures in the world. All of these experiences opened a limited view to a wide one.

Do you know the end of Cinderella's story? I do not know, either. But I enjoyed my university life very much. It was not only a fun period, it deeply changed my life. I am always optimistic because I have independence, confidence, and a wide view.

What is the best invention of the 20`" century? If you have to choose only one, all people will choose the computer. There are many inventions of the 20th century such as the television and the microwave oven that have changed our lives, but there are five important reasons that I choose the computer. Computers have been changing our lives because of their functions, such as the web, email, multimedia, PIMS, and games.

First of all, we can use the Internet through computers. We can find almost all information from computers. For example, you can find information that you need from Yahoo, Altavista and Google; you can buy or get it free from web pages.

Second, we can send email to our friends and family. It is free and direct. If you send your message through mail, you have to pay for sending it and it takes a few days to receive, but nowadays we can send not only email but also attached files directly.

Third, we can enjoy multimedia through a function of the computer. There are so many media such as Music CDs, DVDs, MP3s, Streaming Video, and Digital TV. We can enjoy all of them by computer. For example, If you take a picture on your own digital camera and camcoder, you can copy, save, and modify it in your computer.

Fourth, one of the important functions is to use PIMS in your computer. PIMS is Personal Information Management Software which includes Outlook, Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Frontpage. This software can help you manage your life more efficiently.

Finally, games are one of the fields in computers. We can play computer games that we want to play and network games with our close friends. We can spend our leisure time playing games.

In conclusion, computers have been changing in our life style through a variety of functions such as the Internet, email, the support of many media, convenient software, and entertainment. So it is the best invention of the 20th century.
