7. Definitions, Descriptions, & Explanations
Tuesday
Activities will include:
- Return of website analyses
- Discussion of Chapters 14 & 15; then write, with your collaborative partner, a definition and technical description of an object I bring to class. Spend 10-15 minutes exploring the object, and then write the definition and technical description with your team members.
- Discussion of descriptions - Metaphor: n. from Greek metapherein, 'to transfer.' "A figure of speech in which a word or phrase literally denoting one kind of object or idea is used in place of another to suggest a likeness or analogy between them (as in drowning in money)." Simile: "like" and "as." Question: Are "like" and "you know" halting attempts at metaphor/simile? When writing about subjects unfamiliar to an audience, appropriate and skillful use of figurative language may increase the appeal of the document.
