History and Social Sciences Teacher Licensure

Requirements for History Majors

Students majoring in History and seeking teacher licensure in History/Social Studies must meet the following content requirements:

Complete an endorsement in American History:
  • Take HIST 221 & one U.S. pre-1870:  353, 355, 356, 365, 450, 451, 460, 461, or 465.
  • Take HIST 222 & one U.S. post-1870:  354, 360, 361, 366, 391, 460, 461, or 465.
  • Take one U.S. topical:  307, 370, 380, 386, 389, 396B, 456, 472, 473, 488, 489, or 496B.
  •  History course descriptions.
Complete an endorsement in World History:
  • Take HIST 201 & one pre-1500:  304, 316, 402, 403, 404, 405, 406, 407, or 421.
  • Take HIST 202 or 207 & one post-1500:  318, 321, 323, 325, 383, 388, 390, 408, 419, 420, 422, 424, 427, 428, 429, or 431.
  • Take one from Non-Europe:  336, 337, 338, 339, 340, 341, 474, or 479.
  • History course descriptions.


Complete an endorsement/minor in a third Social Science:

  • American Government/Political Science (recommended):  Take POL S 215 and 12 credits from:  241, 251, 305, 306, 310, 319, 320, 344, 357, 358, 359, 360, 361, 364, 371, 381, 385, 406, 410, 413, 420, 421, 430, 431, 433, 453, 464.  Political Science course descriptions.
  • Anthropology:  Take ANTHR 201 and 202; 306 or 309; 307 or 308; and 3 additional credits of ANTHR.  Anthropology course descriptions.
  • Economics:  Take ECON 101 and 102 and 9 credits from: 301, 302, 312, 320, 321, 344, 353, 355, 370, 376, 415.  Economics course descriptions.
  • Psychology (excluding PSYCH 230 and C I 333):  Take PSYCH 101, & 301; and 9 additional credits of PSYCH (PSYCH 440 recommended).  Psychology course descriptions.
  • Sociology:  Take SOC 130 or 134 and 12 credits from: 219, 235, 302, 305, 310, 325, 327, 330, 331, 332, 334, 340, 341, 345, 377, 380, 381, 382, 401, 411, 415, 420, 435, 461, 484, 485.  Sociology course descriptions.

Complete all remaining History and Social Sciences core requirements.
Complete all remaining University Teacher Education Program requirements.
Complete any and all remaining requirements for a degree in History

In addition, students pursuing teacher licensure must:
  • Earn a grade of B- or above in all History and Social Sciences content courses
  • Maintain a minimum 2.5 cumulative grade point average
  • Maintain a minimum 2.75 grade point average in content courses
