History and Social Sciences Teacher Licensure

General Education and Core Social Sciences Requirements


Regardless of major, all students seeking secondary teacher certification in History and the Social Sciences at Iowa State must complete the following courses:

General Education
  • English 150:  Critical Thinking and Communication (3 cr. – previously Engl 104)
  • English 250:  Oral, Written, Visual, and Electronic Composition (3 cr. – previously Engl 105)
  • Psychology 230:  Developmental Psychology (3 cr.)
  • Mathematics or Statistics (3 cr. minimum from approved LAS list)
  • Natural Science (6 cr. minimum from approved LAS list)
  • Sp Cm 212, Sp Cm 313, or Thtre 358 (3 cr.)

History & Social Sciences Core
  • History 201:  Introduction to Western Civilization I (3 cr.)
  • History 202:  Introduction to Western Civilization II (3 cr.)
  • History 221:  Survey of United States History I (3 cr.)
  • History 222:  Survey of United States History II (3 cr.)
  • Political Science 215:  Introduction to American Government (3 cr.)
  • One course in World Politics.  Choose from:  POL S 241, 251, 340, 341, 342, 343, 346, 349, 350, 356, 422, 430, 431, 440, 451, or 452 (3 cr.)

In addition, students pursuing teacher licensure must:
  • Earn a grade of C or above in all History/Social Sciences content courses
  • Maintain a 2.5 or higher cumulative grade point average
  • Complete all professional and content requirements
  • Complete a degree in either History or Political Science
