and Social Sciences Teacher Certification
Teacher
Education Program Requirements
Students seeking secondary teacher certification in History and Social
Sciences must complete the following requirements from the College of
Human Sciences and Department of Curriculum and Instruction:
Basic courses in
Curriculum & Instruction (C I)
- C I 202: Introduction to Instructional Technology for
Grades 7-12 (3 cr.)
- C I 204: Social Foundations of American
Education (3 cr.)
Prior to applying
for admission to the University Teacher Education Program (UTEP)
students must complete the following:
- C I 280L: Pre-Student Teaching Experience: Early
Field
Experience (0.5 cr.) -- Prerequisite for admission to University
Teacher
Education Program (UTEP)
- C I 219: Orientation to Teacher Education for
Secondary
Mathematics, Science and Social Studies Majors (1 cr.) -- Must be taken
concurrently with C I 280L
- Take the Praxis I (PPST) Exam.

- Establish a minimum cumulative ISU grade point of 2.50.
- Earn a grade of C or above in all C I, SP ED, HD FS, or
other professional courses
- Earn a grade of B- or above in all content area
courses
- Upload one graded artifact to one's UTEP e-portfolio and
"share" with Prof. Bremer
- A criminal background check (usually completed as part of C
I 280L)
- Students must apply for admission to the University Teacher
Education Program (UTEP) at least two semesters prior to student

Following UTEP
admission students may complete the following courses/requirements:
- C I 280A: Pre-Student Teaching Experience:
Teacher Aide (2 cr.) -- Prerequisite: C I 280L
- PSYCH/C I 333: Educational Psychology (3 cr.) --
Prerequisite: Psych 230
- C I 406: Multicultural Education (3
cr.) -- Prerequisite: UTEP Admission
- C I 426: Principles of Secondary Education
(3 cr.) -- Perquisite: UTEP Admission
- SP ED 401 (formerly SP ED 450): Teaching Secondary Students
with
Exceptionalities in the General Education Classroom (3 cr. --
Taken concurrently with C I 498) -- Prerequisite: UTEP
Admission
- HIST/C I 480A: Field Experience for Secondary Teaching
Preparation: Social Studies (2 cr. --Taken in conjunction with C I 498)
-- Prerequisite: UTEP Admission
- Upload 12 graded artifacts
to his or her UTEP e-portfolio prior to taking HIST/C I 498
- HIST/C I 498: Methods of Teaching History/Social
Sciences (3 cr. -- Taken the Fall term
immediately
prior to student teaching) -- Prerequisite: UTEP Admission.
N.B.: HIST/C I 498 is
offered
only in fall terms
Following completion of all the
above UTEP requirements one may complete:
Curriculum
and Instruction course descriptions.
Students must also:
- Maintain a minimum 2.5 cumulative grade point average
- Maintain a minimum 2.75 grade point average in content
courses
- Maintain an active UTEP e-portfolio
