History and Social Sciences Teacher Licensure

Teacher Education Program Requirements


Students seeking secondary teacher certification in History and Social Sciences must complete the following requirements from the College of  Human Sciences and Department of Curriculum and Instruction:

Basic courses in Curriculum & Instruction (C I)
  • C I 202: Introduction to Instructional Technology for Grades 7-12 (3 cr. – previously C I 201)
  • C I 204: Social Foundations of American Education  (3 cr.)

Prior to applying for admission to the University Teacher Education Program (UTEP) students must complete the following:
  • C I 280L: Pre-Student Teaching Experience: Early Field Experience (0.5 cr.)Prerequisite for admission to University Teacher Education Program (UTEP)
  • C I 219: Orientation to Teacher Education for Secondary Mathematics, Science and Social Studies Majors (R cr.) -- Taken concurrently with C I 280L
  • Take the Praxis I (PPST) Exam.  See:  http://www.teacher.hs.iastate.edu/praxis.php
  • Apply for admission to the University Teacher Education Program (UTEP) at least two semesters prior to student teaching.  See:  http://www.teacher.hs.iastate.edu/admission.php

Following UTEP admission students may complete the following professional courses:
  • C I 280A: Pre-Student Teaching Experience:  Teacher Aide (1 cr.)
  • C I 333: Educational Psychology (3 cr.)
  • C I 406: Multicultural Education (3 cr.)
  • C I 426: Principles of Secondary Education (3 cr.)
  • SP ED 450: Teaching Secondary Students with Exceptionalities in the General Education Classroom  (3 cr. -- Taken concurrently with C I 496)
  • C I 496: Methods of Teaching History/Social Sciences (3 cr. -- Taken the term immediately prior to student teaching)
  • C I 480A: Field Experience for Secondary Teaching Preparation: Social Studies (2 cr. --Taken in conjunction with C I 496)
  • C I 417A: Student Teaching: Social Studies (16 cr. -- Normally completed one’s last semester)

Curriculum and Instruction course descriptions.

Students must also:
  • Maintain a minimum 2.5 cumulative grade point average
  • Earn a grade of C or above in all C I, SP ED, HD FS, or other professional courses
  • Participate in an international experience, including international student teaching, course-related travel abroad, or volunteer work with an international program on campus.
