Option 2: Reading
Chaucer Aloud
All extra credit options are worth 70
quiz/essay points to participants. If you choose to do Option 2 for extra credit,
you will read a selection of approximately 30 lines of The Canterbury Tales
in your best attempt at Middle English. For your reading, you may choose
one of the following, all of which are available through the Chaucer MetaPage (listen to them online to perfect your Middle English pronunciation):
- The General Prologue, ll. 1-34 read by Alan Baragona of VMI
- The General Prologue, The Knight's Portrait read by Alan Baragona of VMI
- The General Prologue, The Prioress's Portrait read by Alan Baragona of VMI
- The Miller's Prologue, complete read by Alan Baragona of VMI
- The Miller's Tale, Nicholas Seduces Alisoun read by Alfred David of Indiana University
- The Wife of Bath's Tale, The Wedding Night read by Alan Baragona of VMI
The most important thing when performing
this option is that you legitimately try to pronounce the Middle English text
correctly. I won't expect perfection, but I will expect a serious attempt to
approximate the correct pronunciation and spirit of the text. Think about what
the words mean to help you interpret the lines for the audience. Our
text contains a guide to reading Chaucer's Middle English if you want extra assistance.
You may record your performance and bring a video tape or CD or DVD to class if you are
shy about performing live in front of the class (ask me about video equipment
if you want the video option).
If you plan to do
a selection of Chaucer aloud, please sign up by Thursday, Dec. 7, indicating
which selection you intend to do and what technology, if any, your production
will require me to bring to class.
