Virginia Cunning was one of the original members of the Central Iowa Scottish Dancers. She, and her husband Larry, were regular and enthusiastic dancers for many years. Virginia encouraged dancers of all ages and abilities, and was always alert to potential teachers of Scottish dancing. She understood in a very basic way, the need to continue Scottish dance classes, and to encourage new teachers, if the group was to be a success and grow.
In the last few years, she had hip replacement surgery. She was back at class within weeks of the surgery, and resumed dancing not long after. After she was diagnosed with cancer and was undergoing radiation and chemotherapy, she continued coming to class, even though she was tired and not feeling her best. She continued to come to class right up to the end of the Fall dancing term in early December. She died the following March.
Virginia would have approved of a scholarship fund to enable dancers and teachers to pursue their love of dancing, and to further the interests of the Central Iowa Branch of the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society.
