Joining and Using the ISU FreeBSD Mailing List

List Charter (of sorts):

• This mailing list is available only for people with Project Vincent accounts. Presently, this list is not a majordomo list or other type of list where users send mail to it asking to be subscribed. Users subscribe and unsubscribe themselves with a command described below.
• The main function of this list is to provide local help for users of FreeBSD at Iowa State. Questions and answers may be mailed to it by anyone, and all members on the list will receive these messages.
• Occasional FreeBSD announcements may be made to the list. For official announcements from the FreeBSD core team, see the USENET newsgroup comp.unix.bsd.freebsd.announce

To Subscribe to the List:

1. Issue the chlist command from the vincent% prompt as follows:

   
       vincent% chlist  freebsd  -a   username
       WARNING: Updates to mailing lists and changes to pobox occur daily at
       5 am and midnight.  Use -q or -quiet to suppress this message.
       vincent%
     

   Fill in your Project Vincent username for username. Only people with Project Vincent accounts can join this list. When you issue the command, you will get the WARNING message. This message reminds you that you will not begin receiving mail from the list until midnight or 5:00 am of the following morning.

To Send Mail to the List:

1. Enter a mailer program (i.e., comp, mail, easy, dxmail, etc.).
2. On the To: line, enter: freebsd@iastate.edu
   Then simply type up your message and send it as normal. Do not worry when you get a copy of the email that you just sent. Unless otherwise noted in the message, it did not get returned to you due to an error. All members of the list will receive the message, including you.

To Unsubscribe from the List:

1. Issue the chlist command from the vincent% prompt as follows:

   
       vincent% chlist  freebsd  -d   username
       WARNING: Updates to mailing lists and changes to pobox occur daily at
       5 am and midnight.  Use -q or -quiet to suppress this message.
       vincent%
     

   The same instructions apply here as above in the case of joining the list. When you issue the command, you will get the WARNING message. This message reminds you that you will not stop receiving mail from the list until midnight or 5:00 am of the following morning.
