Textbook: Calculus, 9th edition, by Varberg, Purcell, Rigdon.
Class schedule: MTRF 1:10 to 2 pm. Carver 298 (Moved from Carver 282).
Course content: From the textbook, chapters 5, 7-10. A few sections may be omitted.
Quizzes: There will a weekly 10-20 minutes quiz, typically on Friday. To aid in the preparation of these quizzes, suggested problems will be posted on the class web page. No make-up quizzes will be given unless extenuating circumstances arise.
Exams: There will be two in-class exams, a departmental midterm exam, and a departmental final exam. No make-up exams will be given.
ALEKS assessment: In the spring semester, the "ALEKS" system will be used to assess and improve the pre-calculus skills of students enrolled in Calculus. You will need to go to http://www.aleks.com/plugin. The registration code is HJN6P-VEMPV. Click on the link marked "SIGN UP NOW" (to upper left) and supply this code, along with other information, when prompted. You will be required to pass the assessment with a score of at least 80% by Thursday, January 31, 2008, otherwise you will receive 0 points for that component of your grade. Any student who does not pass the assessment on the first try will be guided by the ALEKS software through an individualized tutorial, in preparation for trying the assessment again. Grading:
Calculators: A calculator is not required for this course, however, it may help you to have one. Typically no calculator will be allowed in the quizzes and in-class exams. If a calculator is permitted, you must show all your reasoning. You are responsible to know how to use your calculator. Online help for some models can be found at http://www.prenhall.com/divisions/esm/app/calc_v2/index_2.html.
