Earning a Laboratory Waiver While Auditing Physics 111, 112, 221 or 222

or while having "formal permission" to complete the course (after a formal "drop")

What does it mean to "audit" a course? A student who registers on an audit basis is entitled to all the privileges of other enrolled students, namely, to attend class, take exams, ask questions of the instructor, and to seek help in the help room. The only difference is that no grade will be submitted by the department to the Registrar for students who audit. The University requires registration of an audit by day #10 of the semester.

What does it mean to have "formal permission" to complete the course after a drop? Occasionally students who drop one of these courses desire to continue in the course, learning as much as they can with the expectation that they will take the course in a future semester for a grade. If the drop occurs after the fourth week of the semester, and if there is sufficient space to accommodate the student, the course supervisor may grant formal permission to the student to participate fully in the course. There is a brief form available in the department office for requesting "formal permission" to continue in the course after executing a drop.

A student who is auditing or who has received formal permission to continue in the course after a drop can earn a lab waiver, that is, a waiver of the laboratory when taking the course for credit in a future semester. To earn this waiver, the student must participate in all facets of the course as well as complete all laboratory work satisfactorily.

It is the student’s responsibility to provide documentation for a waiver, namely, a completed copy of the form below titled, “Certification of Completion of the Course”. During the semester in which the lab is completed, students should inform their recitation and lab instructors within one week of registering on an audit basis (or receiving formal permission to continue after a drop) that completion of this form will be requested at the end of the semester.
