Registering for
Physics 221 or Physics 222
(for the spring or
fall semester)
- If you
have difficulty registering for a section that fits your schedule, DO NOT
PANIC; it is department policy that all students who need this course will
be accommodated. However, you must do your part as described below.
- Register
in timely fashion. Do not delay needlessly.
- If you
are already registered for a section or course that you now know you will
not be attending, DROP it as soon as possible. This helps everyone,
even possibly you. For example, a student who is registered for a section
that you want to add may be waiting for the space that you create when you
drop!
- Be
sure to consider all sections of this course that do not conflict with
your other classes or university commitments. To do this sensibly,
complete a schedule grid (see below) showing the day(s) and time(s)
of all your classes.
- If
none of the sections which do not conflict with your other classes are
"open" (i.e., have space for you), try again in a few days.
- Many
"closed" sections become "open" again, as students
drop sections or more space is opened by the department.
- The
administration typically holds many more seats than necessary for
"Learning Teams"; these seats eventually get released for
general use.
- And
occasionally, an additional section or two is opened if that becomes
necessary.
- You
may have to change sections in one of your other courses in order to avoid
a conflict with an "open" section of this course.
- If you
have not been able to register by the first day of classes:
- Attend
the section of your choice (unless directed by staff to do otherwise),
including the lecture, recitation and lab classes.
- Inform
the section instructor that you are trying to get into the section.
- Continue
to try to register via the AccessPlus or the touch-tone system until the
second week of classes. Control of the registration process is not given
to the department until the second week.
- If you
have not been able to register by the beginning of the second week of
classes:
- Take
your schedule grid to Room 12 Physics, and inform the physics
course secretary, Ms. Judy Zunkel, of the problem. Complete a form to be
placed on a waiting list for the section(s) which you can attend.
Typically considerable space is available by this time as a result of lab
waivers.
- Check
back as directed by the secretary; typically all cases will be resolved
by the first few days of the second week of classes.
- Difficult
cases are referred by the secretary for resolution to the faculty lab
supervisor or the Assistant Chair for academic matters.
- We
insist that you have completed a schedule grid before you request
assistance; it is an invaluable aid to all concerned in resolving
scheduling problems.
Background information:
- Typically
additional openings become available in the course after the first few
days of classes, when some students request and receive a waiver of the
laboratory. These open seats do not appear on the web or touch-tone
systems, however. (Note: It is the maximum allowable enrollment in laboratory
that limits enrollment in most sections.)
- Typically
sections in this course are "opened" gradually over a period of
weeks after registration begins. For example, a section might initially be
assigned 10 "seats", then 15, then 20, and then the actual
maximum of 24. This procedure results in a more even distribution of
enrollments, so that when students attempt to register, there are likely
to be a few openings in many sections, rather than many openings in only a
few sections.

Registering for
Physics 221 or Physics 222
(for the Summer
session)
- Special
Information for Summer Sessions:
- In
summer, there are only 2 or 3 sections.
- Because
there are so few sections in summer, sometimes it is not possible to
resolve a conflict with another course.
- The
budget for summer classes is strictly controlled by the university. We
can offer only as many sections as are approved.
- Because
of the above conditions, we cannot guarantee that we can accommodate all
students who request the course in summer. However, in practice, it is
rare that we cannot do so.
- Be
safe! Register as early as possible!
- For
the summer session, if you have not been able to register after trying
numerous times, contact the
physics course secretary, Ms. Judy Zunkel, at 294-4936, for advice.
