REQUESTING A LABORATORY
WAIVER
If you are enrolled in Physics 111, 112, 221 or 222 and have successfully completed the laboratory component of the same course at Iowa State in a previous semester, you may be eligible for an optional waiver of the laboratory during the current semester.
1. All lab waivers must be requested in writing (they are not automatic) using the form below.
2. Waivers should be requested on the day of the first lecture class of the course. Waivers requested after that date may be denied unless there is good reason for the lateness of the request.
3. A special note for students in Physics 221 or 222: If you request and are granted a waiver, please understand that:
a. the grade which you receive in your recitation will be based entirely upon your performance in recitation this semester;
b. as a result of the waiver, your performance in recitation will weigh more heavily in your final grade;
c. all students, whether they have a lab waiver or not, are eligible to earn the same maximum number of points in their recitation/lab section toward their final point total in the course;
d. it is presumed that you understand the lab work, and you are expected to answer the lab questions on course examinations.
4. A special note for students in Physics 111 or 112: If you request and are granted a waiver, please understand that your grade this semester will be based entirely upon your performance during the current semester. Also note that it is presumed that you understand the lab work, and that you are expected to answer any lab questions that may be on examinations given during the semester.
Procedure:
1. Complete the form below and give it to the course-work secretary in Room 12, Physics, on the day of the first lecture, or as soon as possible after that.
2. If you completed the laboratory while auditing the course or with "formal permission" to complete the course (after a drop), submit also the fully completed form, "Certification of Completion of the Course". This second form is not necessary if you completed the lab while taking the course for a grade.
3. Attend all labs until your waiver has been approved.
4. Enter your name, etc., on the sheet for your course in the Waiver Request Log at the secretary’s counter.
5. After a day or so check the log to see if your request was approved by the faculty lab supervisor.
