Summer, 2002
Laboratory Grades: The laboratory is a required part of this
course; it is not optional. To pass
Physics 111, you must complete satisfactorily all the scheduled pre-labs
(before lab) and experiments. Failure to do so will result in an F grade for
the entire course.
Laboratory Waivers: If you are repeating this course and you
successfully completed the lab portion previously, you may request an optional
waiver of the laboratory. See the sheet
titled, “Policies Concerning Lab Waivers”, available in Room 12. Waivers must
be requested at the beginning of the semester, and if you are granted a lab
waiver, you will be required to attend and participate in
recitation. You also will take the same
exams as others, including any questions concerning lab.
Absences from Laboratory: Valid reasons for missing your scheduled
classes include illness, a family emergency or a conflicting University
activity. The following procedures are
to be followed in the case of an absence from lab.
1. Whether you use Method "A" or
Method "B" described below, you must do the following for your
make-up work to be accepted by your regular instructor for grading:
a. have
your work (pre-lab and lab) signed and dated before you leave the lab room
by the lab instructor who is present when you do the make-up lab;
b. complete
and attach to your work the Make-up Work Cover Sheet (copies are available in
lab and in Room 12);
c. deliver
promptly (i.e., the day the work is
performed) the cover sheet and work to your regular instructor (e.g., his/her office, or the homework box in
Room 12, or the similar box outside the south door to Room 12);
d. provide
your instructor with a written explanation of your
absence (see format below); this note must reach your instructor's person,
office or mail box as soon as it is reasonably possible.
e. have
permission of the lab supervisor in cases involving more than two make-ups
during the semester. No more than two
make-ups will be accepted without prior
approval of the lab supervisor. A
student who is unable to attend his/her regular lab class because of frequent
conflicts must process a section change with the registrar's office; the
make-up procedure may not be used in such cases.
2. Method
"A" (The Preferred, Common Method): If possible, perform the
experiment that you missed promptly (while the apparatus is still available) in
a lab section other than your own if
there is room in that class. (In summer when there are only a few sections,
this is not as useful an option as it is during the regular academic year.) All
the dates and times when particular experiments are available can be learned by
examining the lab schedule (see the previous page). Inform the presiding
instructor at the beginning of class of your desire to do the experiment as a
make-up; if after class begins there still is sufficient space for you,
normally the instructor will permit you to stay (in those rare cases when there
is not sufficient space, you will have to leave). Note that in the case of an absence that can be foreseen, the
make-up lab may be performed before your regularly scheduled lab.
3. Method
"B" (Replacement Experiment Method): If you were unable to
perform the missed experiment as described above, come to class at one of the
times listed below and be prepared to perform makeup experiment #1 (#2,
Newton's Second Law); if you have missed two experiments, then you will also
have to perform (at a second makeup time) makeup experiment #2 (#90, Rolling
Objects). During these days, a maximum of two experiments may be
performed to make up for experiments missed during the semester. It will not
be possible to make up more than two experiments during these days. You may
attend at any of the scheduled times that is convenient. However, be warned--if
you wait until the last scheduled makeup period, there is no guarantee that
there will be room for you. Toward the end of the semester, copies of the
write-ups for make-up experiments #1 and #2 will be available in the lab room
and in Room 12.
Schedule for the special make-up
experiments in Room 64 (dates
shown are in the last week of classes):
Monday, Aug. 5 9:50 - 12:00, 1:20 - 3:30, 3:40 - 5:50
Thursday, Aug. 8 7:30 - 9:40, 12:10 - 2:20, 2:30
- 4:40
4. Students who ignore these procedures should
expect to receive a failing grade for the entire course. Questions concerning these procedures and
cases of unusual hardship should be referred to the faculty supervisor of the
laboratory. The rare case of an unintentional absence without good cause
should be discussed with your regular lab instructor.
The
required written explanation for a laboratory absence should be written in the
format shown below. Simply copy the
format by hand, if you like.
