  • There is no class on Monday, December 3rd
  • There will be an optional review session for the final exam during the lab time on Thursday, December 6th
  • The final exam will be on Monday, December 10th from 9:45-11:45 am and will include:
    • 40 pts on new material since Exam 2
    • 20 pts on comprehensive material
    • 40 pts for lab practical exercise(s) in the computer lab
  • Some announcements about the class projects:
    • Written reports are due Monday December 3rd
    • All students are REQUIRED to attend ALL project presentations as your peer evaluation forms will be the last homework assignments
  • Project Presentation Schedule:
    • Wednesday, December 5th:  Xiong and Devin, Tonia
  • Friday, December 7th:  Kendra and Drew, Addie
  • Study Guide 2 Answers are have been posted
  • *NOTE: Due to a scheduling conflict, the review session on Thurs. Oct. 25th will start at 2 p.m. rather than the usual time of 1 p.m.
  • Study Guide #2 (for Exam 2) is finally posted.
  • Review session on Thursday Oct 25th – Study Guide #2 Answers will be posted & discussed
  • Exam 2 is on Friday October 26th
  • The lecture notes from Wednesday, October 10th have been revised slightly from the version sent to the class by email
  • Note that both Eddy articles are considered required reading, but that only the dynamic programming article will be covered in the first exam

·         IMPORTANT: For graduate students in the BCB PhD program, BCB 444/544 does NOT fulfill any Core Course requirements. For other graduate majors or certain training grants (e.g., IGERT, MGET), it may be used to fulfill Bioinformatics “Area of Specialization” or “Bioinformatics Core Course” requirements for other interdisciplinary majors. Please check with your program Chair to be sure!

·         New and returning BCB graduate students are welcome to audit BCB 544, sit in on lectures of interest, or register for the course as an elective.

·         Only 1 textbook is required. Please attend first class before deciding whether to purchase any of the optional textbooks available in the bookstore.

·         Major changes in the Fall 2007 offering (relative to Fall 2006 offering):

o                                more focused on computational approaches and practical applications (less detailed biology)

o                                Different textbook:  Essential Bioinformatics, Xiong (see below)

·         The first lab meeting will be in the library in Room 32
