Poisson's Ratio is the ratio of transverse strain to longitudinal strain. Transverse strain is perpendicular to the direction of the load. Longitudinal strain is parallel to the direction of the load.

In this experiment three types of metal bars; aluminum, steel and brass, are tested using the table top tester. Strain gages are placed on the bars in the longitudinal and transverse directions. Once the bars are loaded, strains are measured using a strain indicator and switch and balance unit.

Strain readings are taken at various loading conditions. Modulus of elasticity as well as Poisson's Ratio can be determined.
