Kenneth R. Driessel
Here is some basic information about me:
I am a visiting scholar at the mathematics department at Iowa State
University. My office is in 447 Carver Hall. My office phone number is
(515)-294-8513. I have phone mail at that number. The phone number of
the math department office is (515)-294-1752. The phone number of the
FAX machine in the math office is (515)-294-5454. My postal mailing
address is: Department of Mathematics, Iowa State University, 400
Carver Hall, Ames IA 50011 . My electronic mail address is:
driessel@iastate.edu .
My schedule is rather variable. However I am usually in
Carver Hall someplace from early morning to mid-afternoon on tuesday and
friday.
Here is a summary of my higher education:
- B.S. University of Chicago 1962, Major: Mathematics
- M.S. Oregon State University 1965, Major: Mathematics
- Ph.D. Oregon State University 1967, Major: Mathematics
I running a seminar this fall:
I have offered several courses during the last few years:
- Classical Invariant Theory
Summer, 1999
- Applications of Lie Groups and
Cartan Coframes Fall, 1998
- Representation Theory and Young
Tableaux Summer, 1998
- Topics in Algebraic Topology
Fall, 1997
- Topics in Algebraic Topology ,
Summer, 1997

Here is a summary of my current research:
I am currently interested in numerical linear algebra for structured
matrices. Specifically, I am trying to find a fast way to compute the
singular values of Toeplitz matrices. I hope that the study of algebras
related to Lie algebras will lead to a solution of this problem.
You can electronically access some of my
recent reports and recent talks.
Here is a summary of some of my other interests:
I cross-country ski in the winter. I bicycle ride in the summer. I was
advisor for the Iowa
State University Cycling Club from the summer of 1994 to the summer
of 1997.
