Iowa State Department of Residence Research Office
Fall 2003 Summary Grade Report for Undergraduates in Residence Halls and Frederiksen Court (FC)
Gender
The mean comparison of semester grade point average (GPA) by gender as indicated in Table 1, shows that females achieved significantly higher GPAs than males, F(1, 5715) = 119.28, p <.001. The females mean GPA was 2.96, while the males mean GPA was 2.70.
Gender and Classification
As shown in Table 2, there was a significant difference found between gender and classification, F(3, 5675) = 42.64, p < .001. As expected sophomores (M = 2.88) had higher mean GPAs than freshmen (M = 2.74), juniors (M = 2.99) had higher mean GPAs than sophomores, and seniors (M = 3.25) had the highest mean GPAs. When comparing gender and classification, females in all classification levels achieved significantly higher mean GPAs than males.
Gender and Ethnicity
When comparing ethnicity, gender and GPA, there was a significant difference found, F(5, 5393) = 11.42, p < .001. Using the Scheffe post hoc test, Non-Hispanic Blacks (M = 2.39) on average achieved lower GPAs than Non-Hispanic Whites, Asian/Pacific Islanders, and Hispanics (M = 2.83, 2.78, and 2.71 respectively). There was a significant difference between Non-Hispanic Black males (M = 2.24) and Non-Hispanic Black females (M = 2.56), White males (M = 2.72) and White females (M = 2.98), and Asian/Pacific Islander males (M = 2.68) and Asian/Pacific Islander females (M = 2.92).
Fresh Start
Table 4 shows GPA means of Fresh Start residents (M = 2.84) and non-Fresh Start residents (M = 2.80). The result of significance tests shows that students in Fresh Start had significant higher GPAs compared to students not in Fresh Start, F (1, 5715) = 4.05, p-value = .044, p < .05.
