The Cockpit Coaming
Coaming options. There are a lot of alternatives to this type of coaming, the lip or upright (riser) can be made from shaped solid stock, interwoven plywood components, or various laminations including solid fiberglass (although I would add a coloring agent to the resin).

The coaming upright. The cockpit coaming is built from 2-inch to 3-inch pieces of cedar, glued to one another and the hull with Tite-Bond and held at their base with dabs of hot-melt glue while the Tite-Bond sets up. After the upright is glassed on the inside, the hot-melt glue is removed, then the upright is glassed on the outside and a lip will be constructed from resin-impregnated black ash laminations. The finished resin-impregnated structure will then be contoured and given a final clear-coat of resin.
Inside view. This is what the shaped and sanded underside of the finished glue-up looks like. This area will be heavily reinforced with 3-inch glass tape, glass cloth and a house-insulation fiberglass fillet in the depression at the rear of the subdeck... The coaming and the area around the cockpit take a lot of strain and abuse, so it is a great idea to "over-build" this aspect of the construction.

That's all for now. I'm knocking off this project for the winter... see you in the spring!
Well, I'm back.. it is now April of 2002 and I'm back at
it. Please hit the link below to move on to glassing the inside of the hull.
