        Letter of Introduction

 

Purpose

The purpose of this assignment is to

  • Provide your instructor with basic information on yourself,
  • Give your instructor a writing sample, and
  • Give you an opportunity to see how your instructor grades papers.

Tasks

You will need to write a letter to your instructor that introduces yourself and provides some basic information including

  • Your area of study,
  • Your interests,
  • Your expectations from this class,
  • A good way to reach you in case of emergency, and
  • Something about you that has little or nothing to do with school or your pending career.

Requirements

Your letter must demonstrate

  • Your understanding of your audience and the purpose of this assignment, and
  • An appropriate tone and format for the assigned letter.

You should check some outside sources for appropriate format for letters of introduction.

Your grade on this letter will be based on the following criteria:

Content 21-25 points 11-20 points 0-10 points
  Most or all of required information covered effectively. Missing some of the required information or ineffectively covered. Missing most of the require information listed in "Tasks".
Format 9-10 points 6-8 points 0-5 points
  Correct letter format with appropriate spacing and components. Missing one or more components of correct letter format. Missing or inappropriate display of letter format and/or components.
Mechanics 9-10 points 6-8 points 0-5 points
0-1 punctuation or grammar error per page. 2-3 punctuation or grammar error per page. 4 or more grammar errors per page.
Creativity & Prep. 4-5 points 2-3 points 0-1 point
Demonstrates creativity and forethought.  No typos or editing errors. Demonstrates some creativity and no editing errors. Demonstrates little or no creativity and/or no editing errors.

Out of a possible 50 points.
