Definition Essay

Purpose

The purpose of this assignment is to allow you to

  • Demonstrate your ability to use critical thinking skills
  • Demonstrate your ability to write an essay using the discussed conventions of essay writing
  • Demonstrate your ability to research and write a definition of a concept
  • Demonstrate your ability to write an effective argument based on the elements discussed in class
  • Demonstrate your ability to create a correctly formatted and informative bibliography.

Tasks

Find at least two outside source on your chosen topic.

Create definitions of terms associated with the topic.  Create a definition of the argument in terms of the topic.

Then, write an essay using the conventions of essay writing that we discuss in class.  This essay should be a persuasive document that convinces your reader that your definition of the concept is justified--using examples and other supportive material.

Be sure to have all four elements of introductions and all four elements of conclusions in your document. 

You are also responsible for creating a bibliography for the document, so keep close records of your sources.

Requirements

In order to receive full credit for your submission, you must have

·         All of the above tasks completed according to class discussions on Definitions of Concepts.

·         Submitted the essay on your web page prior to the due date/time under a link titled, “Definition Essay”.

·         A correctly formatted bibliography.

·         Edited your essay for all punctuation and grammar errors.

Evaluation

Evaluation of your essay will be assessed using the following rubric:

50%   Content

20%   Mechanics

20%  Application of Course Materials

10%  Creativity and Preparation (including editing)

 

Rubric for Definition Essay/100 Points

Content /50 points

45-50

Contains good supportive content and sufficient details per class discussion.  A correctly formatted Bibliography with at least two sources.

30-44

Contains sufficient supportive content or details but weaknesses in argument in some areas.  Problems with Bibliography.

0-29

Weak supportive content and/or details.  Needs more information, or missing the Bibliography.

Application/20 points

16-20

Demonstrates clear understanding of course lessons and materials, including Pet Peeves.

9-15

Demonstrates some understanding of course materials and lessons, but missing some elements of course information.

0-8

Poor show of course materials and information provided in class.

Mechanics/20 points

16-20

0-1 Grammar or punctuation errors per page.

9-15

2-4 Errors per page.

0-8

More than 4 errors per page.

Creat/Preparation/10

9-10

Demonstrates good creative elements with personal touch.  Good preparation with no typos or editing errors.
