Wombat Readme File: May, 1997
Laura Nelson llnelson@icemt.iastate.edu
Changes since December, 1996:
Added topological surface on the floor
Plotted sampling sites and streams on topological surface
Linked brushing of data points to display of sampling sites
Changed axis position and added lables
Changes since November 8, 1996:
Fixed sound problem (see "Caution" in Readme11.8.96.html)
Basics:
- Location of the files: /home/usr2/llnelson/Project/
- Libraries and includes: /home/vr/CAVE/src/cave.1.1/ & /usr/lib/PSI/
& /usr/include/PSI/
- All other libraries and includes are in the /home/usr2/llnelson/Project/
directory
- The program uses the data glove and the wand.
Compiling the program
- Using Audioworks2.0 sound: smake -uf Makefile_nocontainer_with_sound
- Running without sound: smake -uf Makefile_nocontainer_no_sound
Running the program
- The executable has the name "run". You need to specify a
data file like:
- run ../data/cube6 or run ../data/maha9395
- Configuration files like cube6.colors or cube6.config are loaded automatically
Operating the program
- Mode Changes
- Pressing button1 (left mouse button/wand trigger button) cycles through different modes.
- Pressing button2 (middle mouse button/top left wand button) reinitializes the grand tour.
- Pressing button3 (right mouse button/top right wand button) toggles between brushing/non
brushing mode.
- Mode I: Initial Mode
- You can use the data glove with closed hand (F6) to grab cube corners
to resize the data cube or to grab the center of the data cube to transform
it. Use your open hand (F5) to let go.
- You can start the grand tour using two fingers (F2) by moving the slider
in the right lower corner of the data cube. The sound changes pitch
while the speed increases. Move your two fingers out of the slider's range,
change your gesture or mode to let go.
- You can toggle to brush mode if you toggle button3.
In this stage most of the other controls (like resizing) are disabled in
order to avoid unwanted actions. In order to brush points move the brush
through the data.
- Axes are to your left. They represent the contribution of
each variable to the projection. They can be toggled on/off using the index
finger (F1). Don't use this feature at the moment, it has a bug.
- The toolbox on the left side allows you to select a color or a glyph
type using the index finger (F1). Use your index finger (F1) to select
one of four sizes (rastered positions) from the sliderbar. Remove your
finger from the range of the sliderbar, change your gesture or mode to
let go. After brushing a data point, the data point appears in the color,
glyph and size that you have just set as current state.
- Use your closed hand (F6) in the center of the glyphs to grab and move
the tool. Use any other gesture to let go. With two fingers (F2) in the
center of the glyphs you start rotating the tool. Remove the fingers to
stop the rotation.
- The design box on right half allows you to select a shape and size
for the paintbrush used for brushing data points. The sphere and the box
appear in the currently selected color. Use your index finger (F1) to select
a shape or to change the size. Remove your finger, change your gesture
or mode to let go. Use your closed hand (F6) to reshape the box. Touch
one of the corners of the box and resize it. This allows you to create
a flat shape in order to brush layers of data points. The design works only
if you have selected the box shape.
- Mode II
- This mode contains all the features of Mode I except that the toolbox
does not appear in order to make the data more accessible for viewing and brushing.
- Mode III: Rotation Mode
- The rotation tool and its axes appear at your hands location. Corresponding
axes also appear in the data cube. Use your index finger (F1) and stick
it inside one of the spheres at the ends of the axes of the tool. This
starts a rotation about this axis with counter clockwise orientation. Remove
your finger from the sphere, change your gesture or mode to stop the rotation.
Accordingly, use two fingers (F2) for a clockwise rotation. You can switch
between index finger (F1) and two fingers (F2) at any time.
- Touching the origin of the rotation tool with your index finger (F2)
or two fingers (F2) resets any rotations
- Use the closed hand (F6) to grab and move the rotation tool.
- Mode IV: Watch the tour
- In this mode you can watch the data touring or not touring depending
whether you have started the grand tour.
- You are still able to turn the paintbrush on and off and brush data.
- Eventually we hope to provide a fly-through capability in this mode
Known Bugs:
Don't use the axes feature to toggle on/off variables.
Selecting the star glyph will cause brushed data points to become invisible instead of being colored
The program does not start in any of the above modes. Pressing the button1 will
enter Mode I
