The goal of this work is to reproduce the results of mechanical testing of various biodegradable plastics as published by industry. The work will characterize the mechanical properties of commercially available biodegradable plastic film marketed for application as thin film or bags in packaging. We tested 8 different PLA films, for tensile strength, puncture test, dart drop test as well as the melt and glass transition temperature. In addition we conducted TGA tests on the materials to determine their non-organic content. It was found that results from industry and our results were similar but there were significant differences in some materials. In addition, it was found that aging of the PLA films in standard room conditions resulted in loss of mechanical properties.
