(approved NAB Advisory Committee - 4/27/96)
We the share owner /members of the New Art Basics project agree jointly with the Iowa State University art education faculty that the following principles will guide our collaborative educational reform efforts over the next 10 years.
We believe in always striving for a discipline-specific, content-based approach to art education, incorporated in teaching/learning strategies that:
1. are designed on the standard NAB Strategy Experiment form
2. focus on artistically sound, visual, higher order thinking skills that promote diversity and understanding among cultures
3. emphasize personal authenticity for students
4. are teacher designed and classroom tested.
We believe that all share owner members have an obligation to:
1. learn more about professional level qualitative classroom research methods
2. continually conduct qualitative classroom research on strategies
3. share the resulting knowledge with others in the NAB project.
New Art Basics is founded on a belief in classroom based research of visual and creative thinking skills, with visual outcomes, which are then archived at Iowa State University and shared with all those in the project.
We believe it is required that every NAB teacher/researcher member:
1. consistently develop their knowledge and understanding of the NAB content and practice
2. develop local art curricula and programs that are based on and consistently reflect New Art Basics Principles and Practices
Every member agrees to regularly interact with the NAB "Living Curriculum" Database, download and utilize strategies, and file all classroom testing results electronically.
Every NAB member has a professional obligation to regularly:
1. participate in New Art Basics functions (in person and/or electronically)
2. provide thorough and complete classroom research data (visual and written) for new strategies tested
3. engage in advocacy in spreading information about NAB beyond the project itself.
TECHNOLOGY AND TELECOMMUNICATIONS
We agree that NAB will need to become an increasingly technology based program with a commitment to making new technologies work for the good of art education. This will necessitate:
1. each member becoming computer literate and participating regularly over the telecommunications network.
2. a commitment to co-creating and maintaining a completely computerized and growing "Living Curriculum" that can be interactively accessed and developed by art educators from anywhere in the world
3. that we develop an active presence on the World Wide Web
Every NAB member has an obligation to regularly consult professional literature in the field and integrate theory and practice.
We will all strive to discover and develop ways to help art educators break out of imposed academic isolation, build a sustainable professional community, and develop professionally as art educators through:
1. staff development activities on campus
2. a lending library of professional materials
3. advanced distance education programs
We believe in importance of providing quality preservice teacher education based on New Art Basics content, methods, and philosophy. This requires that each NAB member when called upon:
1. serves as a mentor for an art education graduate student during his/her +2 program
2. provides access to and support within their classroom for mutually agreed upon qualitative classroom research during semester long teaching practicums.
3. provides support and guidance during the ARTED 517/518 teaching practicum semester (student teaching)
Every professional art educator, as a NAB member, agrees to strive to exemplify the highest ideas and practices of the New Art Basics project and to regularly share information about the program with those outside the project.
