| Trillium is among
the easiest flowers to identify with its three white petals, three slender
sepals, and three broad leaves. There were quite a few of them at Ledges
State Park when I visited there in early April 2006, growing on steep slopes
of the hillsides, where they are out of reach from the white-tailed deer
that relish them. Curiously the web site of the National Resources Conservation Service of the USDA does not include Iowa as one of the states where Trillium grandiflorum is found, but here it is for all to see. Trillium is a member of the Lily family, like the wild hyacinth mentioned above, characterized by flowers of 3 or 6 petals, and leaves with parallel veins. |
