This lovely lavender flower grows everywhere in Rome during the summer, on lawns, in parks, and along roadsides--as common as dandelions in the U.S. The Italians call it malva, the origin of our word mauve. The flower also grows in England where it is known as mallow. Older Italians tell me they remember being served salads of malva greens as children.
