It is best to book your flight directly to Iraklion. You can fly directly to Iraklion from many European cities by charter flights or regular flights with Lufthansa from Frankfurt, for example. Therefore, participants from overseas (USA, Canada) who do not want to change airports in Athens may fly directly to Iraklion through Germany. If you fly directly to Athens and then to Iraklion, you must change airports. A taxi from the International Airport to the Domestic Airport will cost around 2000 Drachmas ($10-12). There is also a city bus, which is less expensive.
Olympic Airways has eight flights daily between Athens and Iraklion.
Iraklion can be reached also by boat from Piraeus daily (departure at 6 p.m. and arrival at 6 a.m. the next morning).
Georgia Houpis, Edens Tours and Travel, has offered to obtain the
lowest possible price for US and Canadian participants in our NATO ASI.
For interested participants contact Ms. Houpis directly at
There are many excursions to various areas of Crete. More
information about these excursions can be obtained directly from
A partial map showing the distance from Iraklion to the Porto Elounda Mare Hotel located in Elounda is included. It is approximately 1 hour from the airport to the hotel. ASI will provide a bus sometime during the day, June 18 and June 30, for a small charge. We need to know when you plan to arrive and leave to have the bus for the optimum number of people. Taxies are available for about 14,000 Drachmas. You can share expenses by riding with other participants.
Please note that we have made reservations for you at the Porto Elounda Mare Hotel or the Elounda Ilion if your registration form requested hotel accommodations. The hotel is based on double occupancy and include room and board, breakfast, and lunch or dinner. It is suggested that participants choose breakfast and dinner as the two meals to be covered by this price. This is a special rate given to the ASI and is considerably less than commercially available rates. You are responsible for paying extra expenses such as telephone calls or room service.
Your $100 registration fee guarantees your presence at the ASI and pays for the welcoming reception, a conference dinner, and the refreshments served during breaks. Guests are requested to pay $50 to defray the costs of the welcoming reception and the conference dinner.
If your hotel dates change, please contact the Conference Secretary and not the hotel. The rates we quoted you are special rates, because we guaranteed a specific number of rooms.
The ASI starts Monday, June 19, 1995 at 9:00 a.m. and ends Thursday,
June 29 at 8:00 p.m.
You should plan to arrive by Sunday evening, June 18. There will
be a welcoming reception and registration at the Porto Elounda Mare Hotel
at 8 p.m. Sunday night.
The conference organizers as well as NATO disclaim all responsibility toward travel, accident, or health insurance. Participants should make their own arrangements.
Bring the completed manuscript with you to the conference. Your paper will be refereed at the conference site and if accepted, it will be published in the conference proceedings.
