DOT DOT Highlights
      Provost's Workshop on Russia/Ukraine. Provost John Kozak and the Council on International Programs are organizing a workshop Dec. 10 for faculty and staff having expertise with program initiatives in Russia/Ukraine. A similar workshop will be offered on China spring semester. These workshops will provide opportunities to discuss initiatives taken and outcomes realized; identify crosscutting contacts that would advance program objectives; examine possible proposal submissions; and develop continuing interactions thorough seminars, visiting scholars, or e-mail networks.       Two new faculty positions have been created to enhance the undergraduate international perspective requirement. A protozoologist will be hired in Veterinary Medicine to develop an academic program in global parasitology. Business will hire a new faculty member to coordinate international business efforts within the college and teach international business courses.

      The Study Abroad Center held its annual International Opportunities Fair in the Memorial Union Sept. 22. Over 50 exhibitors from off and on campus helped more than 500 students learn how to incorporate an experience abroad into their degree program.

      "Unity in Diversity" was the theme for International Week 1997, held Nov. 7-14. Each year ISU's International Week promotes global understanding and awareness and enhances friendship among international students, American students and the Ames community. More than 20 international groups participated in different activities with local businesses providing support. The week was sponsored by the International Student Council.

DOT DOT Highlights
      Chao-Hsien Chu, Management, was awarded the 1997-98 "JSPS (Japan Society for the Promotion of Science) Short-term Invitation Fellowship for Research in Japan". Chu spent two months in Japan last summer at the Institute of Policy and Planning Science, University of Tsukuba, Japan.

      During International Week '97, Siew-Tien Lai was awarded a Kennedy-Nehru Scholarship for $300 for significant international understanding.

DOT DOT Languages
      Study abroad opportunities sponsored by the FLL department are available or being developed in France, Austria, Spain, Russia and Mexico for language study and Greece for classical studies. The department is considering requiring all foreign language majors to study abroad and recommending internships abroad or in settings in the U.S. that require them to function in the foreign language. The department is working with Engineering and Agriculture to offer language training for students preparing for work in Germany, France and Ukraine.

      The department is also revising the Russian (language) major to be a Russian Studies major and is proposing a Chinese Studies minor. More native speakers are being used as conversation aides in classes as are authentic and live foreign language media.

      Associate Professor Kathy Leonard will spend several months as a Fulbright-Hays Research Scholar in Bolivia where she will lecture, continue to study Quechua, and interview women writers.

      Department of Music will host John Purser (Scottish musicologist, composer, conductor, playwright, producer, broadcaster, and all around "Renaissance man") Jan. 23-Feb. 6. Contact Dr. Carl Bleyle at cobleyle@iastate.edu.

      With a 1997-98 Council on International Programs grant, Mary Littrell and LuAnn Gaskill, Textiles and Clothing, are working with faculty from Anthropology, Finance and Management to develop teaching materials around international entrepreneurship and small business issues in Ghana, Guatemala, and Malaysia.

      Internationally renowned banner artist Toyohiko Inoue was artist-in-residence in Design and conducted workshops as well as"Matsuri", a week long festival in October with traditional Japanese banners and culture.

      John Thomson, Veterinary Clinical Sciences, presented in October at the Mongolian Herders Association's Workshop on Privatization of Veterinary Services.

      Kenyatta University professors George Eshiwani, Vice Chancellor, and Henry Ayot, Director of International Linkages, visited ISU in November to discuss the new joint summer study abroad program.

      Tongji University in Shanghai and Beijing Polytechnical University in Beijing hosted a delegation from Design consisting of Dean Mark Engelbrecht; Paul Shao, Architecture; and Tim Borich, Community & Regional Planning, Nov. 29-Dec. 7.

      Theatre is introducing an International Storytelling Workshop, Thtre 393C/590, as a 3 credit night class spring semester 1998.

      On Oct. 16 Phi Beta Delta inducted 43 new members, 22 students and 21 faculty and staff, the largest number of new inductees ever for the ISU chapter.

      The ISU Small Business Development Center (SBDC) announces New Horizons(tm), a statewide program to assist Iowa companies in discovering new business opportunities through exporting.

      Officials from Iowa State University and Russia's Nizhni Novgorod State Agricultural Academy have signed an agreement to develop a Russian program that will be similar to ISU's Extension Service.
