President Jischke led a delegation of five ISU officials to China June 21-July 3. The group met with officials from the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences in Beijing and other universities to discuss several initiatives, including international study and scientific exchange opportunities. This trip marks the first time an ISU president has traveled to China while in office. Martha Van Der Kamp, ISU Alumni Association, and Sarah Buck, ISU Foundation, visited Malaysia, Indonesia, andSingapore this summer to re-establish contacts with alumni and friends and to guage interest in further support of the university. Plans are underway for a summer study abroad program at Kenyatta University in Kenya and a Spring Semester program at the University of Newcastle in Australia. Associate Provost Ed Lewis visited the Newcastle site in June. Both programs will start in 1998.
Paul Shao, Architecture, received Honorary Research Fellowships from the Hebei Provincial Museum, Beijing Research Institute of Cultural Relics, and the Yin-Shang Cultural Research Institute. Rotary International Scholars for 1998-99. Congratulations to ISU students Maurice Light, Trent Preszler and Cindy Tschampl for awards of up to $22,000.

Dean of Engineering James Melsa and Professor Glenn Schrader visited six universities in Australia and Singapore in June to promote international internships for engineering students. The trip culminated in the first ISU Alumni gathering in Singapore. Dean Melsa and Professor Schrader will visit universities in Sweden, Norway, and Ireland in late October. From Anthropology, Nancy R. Coinman co-directed an archaeological project investigating Pleistocene sites in Jordan; Shu-Min Huang is examining the factors affecting productivity of ChinaÕs agricultural zones; Michael Warren led seven ISU students to Nigeria with funding from the Minority International Research Training Program; and Michael Whiteford continued research last summer in alternative medical practices and attitudes of men and women toward disease causation in Oaxaca, Mexico. Mary Carey, Campus Visits and Orientation, and Michelle Szabo, Study Abroad Center, were in eastern Germany this summer on the Student Affairs P & S Staff Exchange with Studentenwerk Dresden.
Tim Keller, Landscape Architecture, traveled to Thailand, Taiwan, and
Malaysia last summer to develop student and faculty exchanges as well as
joint research. igdem Akkurt, Art & Design, conducted Earthwatch funded
research to document the traditional Turkish houses of Kula, Turkey
during June and July.
