CEAH announces Seed Grant Recipients 2011-2012
Elisa Rizo (Assistant Professor, Spanish) and Madeleine Henry (Professor
Classical Studies) will examine the use of Greco-Roman traditions in
literary and other cultural productions of Spanish-speaking Africans and
Afro-Latin Americans. Their transdisciplinary endeavor will help illuminate
discussions of colonial encounters and decolonizing strategies on the part
of Afro-Hispanics. In a series of conference papers and essays, they will
examine the use and manipulation of classical idioms in imperial enterprises
and in Black political and aesthetic activity. Based on theoretical
approaches that delve into questions of cosmopolitanism, transnationalism,
race, ethnicity and gender, the ultimate aim of this project is to foster a
better understanding of current societal issues such as nation/border
formation, displacement, migration, membership, community building, civic
participation, women's rights, and revolutionary thought.
